Why did this thing die? It seemed perfectly healthy, was eating mysis and pellets. Been busy the last 2 days and didnt see this gill issue. Only other fish is a cherub and i never saw it mess with the melanurus.

Sucks, i really liked this fish and it was a male coloring up.

It had already bedded down in the sand for the night. About an hour later it wakes up and starts freaking out doing flips going all over the place, then laid down and died

Salinity 35ppm
Alk 155
Nitrates 10

Tank is almost 5 months old and thriving so no cycle issues.

I only had it for about a week, maybe it wasnt totally healthy?

That really looks like Uronema. Now that chloroquine isn’t available there is no treatment for it. Luckily it isn’t super contagious to other fish except wrasses, anthias and chromis. It almost always hits fish in the first two weeks of arrival. Check the library here for my article on red band disease.
