I question how you had a ph of 8.9 with alk of 5.7, something doesn't sound right with testing.. how was that accomplished?
I think because low alk results in unstable PH so you get big PH swings which is harmful to tank inhabitants. Alk is the PH buffer to keep it in proper ranges.
