I recently downsize my clownfish pair from a 75g tank to a 20g tank. Put their anemone in with them as well. They've always got along but this morning I witnessed the female absolutely tearing into the male, and he's all beat up. I don't have another tank for him to live, so for now he's in a large bucket by himself. Idk what to do because we've had them both for 4 years and love them both... I've been told a pair can live happily in a 20g with an anemone. Should I keep him in there and see if they figure it out? Or take him to LFS? IDK...

I second this move. How large is the female? Might be a little angry after getting downsized.
Back to 75?

Shes about 2 inches, not super large but he's only an inch or so.

I can't go back to the 75 I'm getting rid of the tank.

I'll look into acclimation box. Any info on how that'll help?

It will give him time to heal and her to get mad at her reflection and chill out. I call it the no-no box for my fish. Have to put Coco (my powder brown tang) in for a few days when adding a new fish and he chills out

Unfortunately we see this about 20% of the time. If for some reason the bond is broken (in our case after shipping) they don't get along.
Time out in an acclimation box might help or maybe if it's not too aggressive then let them work it out.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Last question. Does the box need to be inside the tank or can it be a HOB?

Had a mated pair in a 20G. Female would hassle male from time to time. Thought at the time they probably needed a bigger tank.

My clowns are bonded, but the female loves to beat the hell out of the male. They have been this way for years.

Sometimes maybe the separation will work so that’s a possibility at least a respite for a bit.

Territory both changed and shrunk.

Not a great combination.
