The petco I go to usually has great looking tanks and fish I’ve had all my fish come from that store and are excellent right now but they didn’t have a barcode and didn’t know the type of clown. They said it’s a photon but I disagree. I’m new to hobby but I could be wrong

You are lucky... The Petco and Petsmart around here don't even offer salt water fish.
Yes all other ones in my state have ich covered clownfish disease in every tank. But I’ve had a hoevans wrasse hawkfish coral beauty angel and all my live rock comes from their tank with no hitch hikers. even my first coral I just got a hairy green mushroom and it was only 30$ the clownfish at talk was only 30 too

Not the prettiest thing in the world right now, but for $20 . I believe its a ORA Aquacultured Marshall Island Hammer Coral (pic from live aquaria, petcos fish & coral source for reference) or maybe it's a soft coral :p

There are surprisingly tons of gorgeous riccordeas for some reason at my local petco. I get all my cat food from there and stop by their marine section from time to time.

I’ve noticed that Petco is really a hit or miss. It depends greatly on location. I found one close to our house that is excellent. I just talked to the aquatic specialist responsible for the marine tanks. She told me she can order anything I need, so I asked for a couple of specimens and she’ll try to get them for me (six line wrasse and pistol shrimp). Will be here next Wednesday hopefully. They have soft corals that look very good as well. Turns out she lobbied the store manager to install a proper lighting over that tank. They have several types of clowns, tangs and other fish. Anemones, few types of shrimp, great looking emerald crabs, etc.

They also stock a lot of marine equipment, which I as surprised to see. Lot’s of chemicals, too.

Contrast this with another Petco that is literally 4 miles away and that place is basically “live rock” or so they call it covered in hair algae and a few half dead marine fish. No corals, but a few miserable looking feather dusters. It’s a night and day difference.

So, I would not discount Petco entirely. Check around. Some are actually quite good. Others are a nightmare you should avoid.
