I remember on my last tank, I had egg crate as the base, and then I added rock on top of that to form my rockscape. Once I did that, I noticed I lost a couple inches of good rockscaping due to the sand bed covering the base, plus some.

As I'm doing my rock work now, the same issue popped in my head. i don't have a couple inches worth of flat / shelf rock to place underneath, to be able to raise the structure up.
I considered doubling up the egg crate base to give it that "little bit of lift". I also have some old 3/16" glass planks that I also considered laying on top of the egg crate to give that added height. But those planks definitely have some weight to them. they were in my sump, used for the baffles.

Has anyone ever raised their rock work, not using shelf rock to do so?

Though I don’t have any pics of other tanks, I’ll be using 1/2 inch acrylic rods to raise my scape just above the sand. Going to drill with a masonry bit and glue the rod in.
