I thought this would be a pretty fun thread since we're a little ways into 2021, what fish species are still rare in 2021? Just fish that are only seen sparsely / almost never seen in the hobby.

As for me, I've never seen any Trssogobius sp, in person, at a store or public aquarium, Trimma Caudomaculatum, Peppermint Angel of course, Tiger Angels, A lot of the non-captive bred Hawaiian fish I'm pretty sure will not be seen very often now (like the golden dwarf morays and hawaiian yellow anthias). There's a lot of other's I could list, but I'd like to hear other inputs!

About the only thing that has changed 2020 to 2021 is the Hawaiian fishing ban. Hawaiian endemics like the potters angel, potters wrasse and flame wrasse will be much harder to get. Others like the yellow tang and chevron/black tang will be harder, though they do exist outside Hawaii.

Temperate species I guess running chillers to keep dull species of fish and deep water coral doesn't interest many people. I am debating starting a tank with native species (im in atlantic canada) we actually have some colourful anemones and it would be fun having a pet sculpin.

I’m Chinese-Canadian and used to be in Vancouver before coming to Asia / China. Pretty fascinated by non-tropical or non-fully tropical (subtropical) systems.
Check out this article about the marine life off the coast of Vancouver the first pic is amazing.

I forgot to mention Centropyge Abei. They regularly live below 100m. Deepest living dwarf angel of all.

I think the rariphotic reefs are the most interesting of all. Basically that in-between zone where you’re in pretty deep water but most fish families still belong to shallow water fish families but also starting to see a couple exclusively deep sea fish families.

Anthias and perchlets have been found below 300m.

There’s also another fish family called the Boarfish (Antigonia) that sort of resemble this weird cross between an angelfish, Butterflyfish and Zebrasoma Tang. They’re a very deep dwelling fish as well.

Just grow it: Have you ever added CO2 to your reef tank?
