As the title says (sorry for the long read but I believe history may be important). I am about to setup a tank that I can put fish only in. I currently have a 8 month old reef tank that is doing very well. Seems to have balanced out nicely and is growing a lot of coralline algae. 40 days ago the last of my fish were wiped out by ICK and possibly marine velvet from what I can determine. It took about two weeks to kill a fish so maybe just ICK. I lost probably close to $1000 in fish from going down this route. So anyway here I am trying to not make the same mistake twice.

Current setup:
90gallon tank 48"x18.5"x24"
2 160s Red Sea LED's
40 gallon breeder triton sump refugium
100lbs live rock
mixed reef with sps on top and all kinds of unique stuff everywhere
UV ligt for 125 gallon setup
Probably setup a filter roller soon as I already hate filter socks.

Stuff in my tank Currently
Conch Snail
Banded Coral Shrimp
Pistol Shrimp
Cleaner shrimp
4 rock anemones
3 regular/not so common anemones
Turbo snails and other cleaner snails
Sexy Shrimp and bumble bee shrimp

What I would like to have in my tank:
a clown tang if possible
Hippo Tank
2 clown fish
boxfish
garden eel
6 line wrasse
Starry Blenny
Coral Beauty
Mandrin Goby ( have have a ton of pods)
Another cool and unique fish

My questions:
What size quarantine tank do I need? (was going to get a 40gal breeder)
Should I buy all these fish at once and do them that way?
Is there something I can put in the tank to calm them and make things easier on them?
there is a lot of advice out there and I would just like some opinions.

Thanks,

1. Size of quarantine tank really depends on the size of the fish you are quarantining (and quantity of fish). I typically use a 10g quarantine tank setup predominantly for the smaller size fish I like to purchase. But, it would make sense to use a 20g long or bigger if quarantining several fish or larger fish.

2. I wouldn't buy all the fish at one time...many will have different quarantining protocols, ie: different environment needs, different medication tolerances, etc... Plus, your tank has been fallow for quite awhile if you waited the 76days. So, it is best to add back slowly to allow the nitrifying bacterial population to expand again.

3. I have had greater issues with stress when using a "sterile" quarantine tank. So, I use many PVC fittings and crazy freshwater fake plant and fake corals in order for the fish to feel secure and hidden at times. Don't use anything porous as that will absorb your medications.

Good luck!
