Hoping someone can help our great little convict tang. He has been thru 4 weeks of hypo with no meds. Raised salinity to 1.026 4 days ago. He Ferociously eats Nori and pecks at frozen and pellets. The last 2 days Ive noticed his mouth is a bit swollen and a bit extended and staying open a bit at rest. Upon close inspection it appears that he’s sticking his tongue out (if they even have a tongue). This morning he barely went for the Nori. He picked up a piece and immediately dropped it. He will peck a couple times then swim away.

I read the sticky about fish issues and there is a mention of an extended mouth that’s likely caused from a stinging coral or inhabitant. This is a brand new system and only has 4 test SPS frags with no corals that have a stinging property. If I need to pull this guy and treat, I can. I just have no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for the crappy pics. It’s the best I could do…

Seems to be quite common with convicts and almost look normal for a convict but also if enlarge may have developed from initially netting when caught or an injury. If eating, keep an eye on it. If not, treat in a seoarate tank using seachem Kanaplex

Thanks for the comment but he’s been in the tank for 5 weeks. No net has touched him since putting him in.
His mouth changed in the last 2 days.

As stated may be injury but I see no damage
If eating observe for improvement
If none, treat as described

Can you get photos under white light? A video would be even more helpful.

It’s too late. He passed :(
Sorry to hear. Were there other fish in with it? They may be at risk for the same issue if it is a contagious disease.

Given the speed at which the tang died, it sounds like a very aggressive problem. Did you see rapid breathing at all? Velvet/Amylodinium will kill fish fast and is not controlled by hyposalinity. You should have seen rapid breathing though.

Thanks Jay,
He actually seemed fine, minus the swollen mouth. He tried to eat but couldn’t. No fast breathing.

All the other fish are fine. He was the only new member. I ran them all thru hypo for 4 weeks before raising salinity. I raised salinity over a week. It would almost appear that raising the salinity caused something to go sideways with him. Salinity had only been to 1.026 for 3 days when the swelling started.

Ive went through 3 and none of them lasted longer than a week.. I gave up on them myself.. I would add them to list of fish to not purchase at this time! I did have great luck with a blonde naso of all tangs that are on that list lol.. I got a little guy about 6 months ago that’s turning into a beast and is happy and healthy as can be!

Thats good to know. I thought they were a hardy tang. Guess that’s not the case. I may just hold off on anymore tangs. I have 2 hippos, a Scopus and a Blue Eye Kole (that’s my favorite). He’s gorgeous and he cleans non stop!
