Was this ich or something worse?

My sharknose goby sadly died just now. I was going to move him into QT today. I wish I’d done this sooner.
Looking at him, I’m worried he had something worse than ich.
This was him on day one:

What I do in cases like this is make a skin scrape and look at it under a microscope. I know people don't have these at home, but there are some cheap micro lenses for cell phones (like $9) that can help ID diseases. I know the fish is dead, but knowing what it had is important in terms of planning your tank going forward.

The heavy mucus can be a sign of end-stage ich, or it could possibly be Brooklynella.

I also see the fish is a bit thin. Was it eating well for you? Perhaps the food you were offering wasn't correct, or was too large?

I hope it was ich and nothing else. He was eating up until two days before he died. Then things went south fast. I hope it’s not brook. Otherwise I’m in for a real treat...

You need to get your fish into qt and fallow your display. Every fish you add will keep dying
