The orange mushrooms in my tank. I bought it as a single polyp 12 years ago... it took over my 29gal. When I upgraded to a 80gal I got rid of as many as I could. They slowly grew back and started taking over big areas of rock. I'm in the middle of an upgrade to a 230gal and planning to try and get rid of all of it if possible by breaking any bits of rock off where it resides.

Green Star Polyp. It's pretty, but overgrows quickly.

I've read in this forum about clove polyps and Xenia being invasive, too. And leathers producing toxins....

It seems people manage these things, toxins with carbon, and overgrowth by pruning and putting them on an island, but some things (GSP, Xenia, mushroom, cloves, Kenya, leathers), I just don't want to deal with.

This is so beautiful though. Haven’t put in any corals yet and I’m so torn about montipora. Love this photo
Don't do it lol!!!!! Once they start encrusting there is no stopping them. Here is a different pic of that tank.....gives a better idea of how they spread and grow.

I still buy monti’s but now I get the expensive ones like kung pau. That way if they get out of control at least I can frag and sell them

Those Monti's, and the tank, are gorgeous. I would love to add to my tank, but would have to place them lower so there is nothing to shade. One corner of my tank gets direct sunlight, and grows algae too well. Maybe that is a good place for a monti cap.

Yeah if you are going to do them, definitely place them low. Shading other acros wasn't the biggest issue though......it was how fast they encrust into every nook and cranny. Impossible to stop once they start.

I just recently added this coral. Now I wonder if I should remove it.
They are good if you are looking to fill a lot of space quickly. They are pretty undemanding and grow fast. If you plan on growing other species though, I would either try to contain on a separate island or remove now lol.

I now keep all SPS and when I first started my tank I had several Zoa’s that I’ve pretty much gotten out. Had a few mushroom that had to go as well. Other than that with SPS you never know what’s going to take off and shade out other corals, I recently sold 2 large colonies to make room for other existing SPS and maybe a couple new SPS.
