I have a newer 125 gal saltwater aquarium with a 30 gal sump, this is my largest tank yet & first time sump.
I have a nitrate spike because purchased 4 new fish & 1 died in aquarium & could not find it to remove.
My nitrates were at 60ppm 1.5 weeks ago. Did a 25% water change, that brought it down to 20ppm. I started using NoPox to lower nitrates. My phosphates are at 0.00. I have a 1.5 gallon refugium in my sump that I started about 3 weeks ago. How long before I start to see my nitrates come in line?
Also should I use a beneficial bacteria like Dr Tims One & only, will that help?

Welcome :) Sounds like you are taking the steps to lower them. Water changes and good test kits are your best friend right now. Best of luck

your po4 needs to be up for the refugium to kick in. it will not lower either without having both to consume.

for now, continue doing water changes to bring the no3 down and to give po4 time to rise.

also, welcome!

Welcome! Glad you joined. Are you phosphates at true zero or just too low for your test kit? Depending what you are doing with your tank (FOWLR) nitrates at 20ppm are okay but some corals will not like that. Watch how your water trends before taking additional action - remember, nothing good happens fast in this hobby and since you say its a newer tank without adding any additional details, I'd just say track your trends for a while while doing ongoing maintenance.

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:
