Would you say this filter would be safe to use in a reef tank?

Agree with @Gareth elliott ....materials (HDPE and Nylon) are reef safe, but a filter sock would provide much larger surface area, allowing faster filtering. I'd suggest a 7 inch mesh sock....mesh socks are easily cleaned by running under a faucet while rubbing fabric to fabric. Also come in various micron sizes.

For polishing would go 100 micron, but it may clog quickly.
200 micron will clog less but polish less too.
Those 2 micron sizes are pretty much what’s available in filter socks.
Thank for sharing, never saw those

The filter won't take long to clog, and when it does, if that sits on top of the bucket, it will overflow onto the floor. I've also used filter cups and not a fan. In a filter cup the filter surface area is only the diameter of the cup since the holes are in the bottom. With a filter sock, all surface area of the entire sock filters out debris. So as the first inch clogs the water rises up to the next inch of sock and so on. JMO :)
