Hello everyone! I am fairly new to reefing (2 years) and very new to anemones and wrasses (acquired first anemone and first wrasse less than one week ago) and was noticing the my wrasse appears to be host, or at least cohabiting with, one of my new anemones. The wrasse is very busy around the tank checking all the nooks for food, but his favorite spot is to go inside the spaceship ornament with the anemone who decided to live there. The wrasse and the anemone seem perfectly happy together. Is this normal? Should I be concerned for either animal? I have included photos (apologies for the poor quality). I would be happy for any advice, knowledge and/or identifications.

My tank is a one year old 125 gal with 30 gal sump with refugium

Oh, maybe it was old age natural death. He was full-size when we brought him home.

If we get a new one, should it be safe with the anemones? I thought they injured him due to the timing.
It's possible your new wrasse had something to do with your shrimp's demise. Your wrasse eats shrimps, crabs, snails, etc. as part of its natural diet. Typically cleaner shrimp are left alone, but not always. As your wrasse matures it's going to be really hard on your clean up crew.

Good point, I forgot about that guy being an invert cleaner. I think I may need to take my memory meds now, as missing legs and such was mentioned lol.

Most cleaner shrimp can tango with a nem with no issues or they know not to go near them. I have ones that walk all over my haddoni and gigs without being eaten. But I have ones that tried it and got eaten. I think it all boils down to the nem and the shrimp.
This is good to know. We will get a new one. He was one of our favorite critters.

Oh...well, maybe not...or at least not in this tank. We did just set up a 30g for my son's large red hermit crabs he got. We did put them in the big tank, but they ate one of our feathers and a soft coral...so they got relegated to their own space.

Many wrasses and hawk fish don’t play nice with shrimp

We have one sexy shrimp who decided to live with the same anemone as the wrasse chose. Wrasse ignores him entirely. I wonder if he is safe...
Time will tell

Any suggestions for additions for the new setup with the large red hermits? He picked a Filefish, a Striped Goby (or so they called it at the store, but I Googled "striped goby" and came up with nothing that looks like him), and a Firefish Goby (which vanished overnight the first night). This 30g is looking a little bleak with so little in it, but I'm a little nervous to just start tossing in critters. No reef lights for it or sump. Just white lights and a HOB filter.

The "striped fish" appears to be a fang blenny. Here is a funny little article about them.

I have a few of these and have never been bitten, but this article just made me laugh.

Oh yeah! That looks just like him! Mine is very timid and never thought to bite me, yet lol
I have owned many of them over the years. Their fangs are very small and I think they only use them if cornered and seriously fearing for their life. They are also a species that is readily captive bred, so they tend to be a very easy to care for fish.

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
