Why are scarlet hermit crabs so difficult to find?

Anyone know why scarlet hermit crabs so difficult to find now adays? Were they over-collected? Come from a different area than Florida? I never see them at LFS anymore, and it is rare to find one available on sites like Reef Cleaners.
