I can't find the dow flake as suggested buy I did find this. Would it be safe to use? If so, since it's same % as dow flake, would I use the same 2.5 cups as suggest in the diy recipe?

Advertisement says "Calcium Chloirde Flake" which isn't the same thing as calcium chloride. :face-with-hand-over-mouth: See if you can get their SDS online and found out what impurities are present. The 77-80% makes me worried, but that could just be moisture?

Looks like "Dow Flake" in a different bag. Should work fine with the same mixing instructions/ dosages.

Probably from the same factory, or a different factory with the same processes for making it.

It would be better if you could find a food grade Calcium Chloride as you have no idea of the impurities contained in that product.

There are many food grade products on Amazon.

Been using this one for a few years now, as have many of us.

For some reason the amazon link doesn't want to show? Just look up Peladow calcium chloride on amazon. $40 for a 50# bag.

I saw that brand, but the mix was a bit higher than I wanted to go with. This bag says strontium, but the sds pages shows zero

Is there anything I should look for on the sds? I mixed it up already. I will probably slow dose. I don't have many good corals in this tank, just in case.

There might be things that would say that it is not ok , but nothing that would say that it is acceptable.

The problem I have with that type of industrial grade product is that there is no guarantee that the composition will be the same from batch to batch. The vendor would simply be shopping around for the cheapest supplier each time they order new raw material.

Food grade though, is always going to be suitable for human consumption and thus likely safe for our tanks and the inhabitants.

Ok, thank you. I'll watch for issues and get a food grade. I appreciate your information

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
