What type of coral are gorgonias or do they have there own? I have an orange spiny sea rod and I am just curious....

Both corals and gorgonians belong to Class Anthozoa, but true corals belong to Subclass Zoantharia, Order Scleractinia. Gorgonians belong to Subclass Alcyonaria, Order Gorgonacea. Gorgonians are more closely related to colts, sinularia, and organ pipes. True corals are more closely related to mushrooms and zoanthids. I keep Diodogorgia sp., Pterogorgia sp., and Pseudopterogorgia sp.

15" Pterogorgia sp. with a small red Diodogorgia sp. in the upper right.

Both Pterogorgia sp. and Pseudopterogorgia sp. are photosynthetic, but require high flow to rid them of their "skin" when they shed.
