I believe the 90's starts grunge.
I think alternative started in Jamaica in the 60 's or with Chuck Berry but I think true alternative started in the 80's.
At least it did for me.

I thought it was called New Age or New Wave. then 90 the spectrum got bigger and Alternative. Thrash, Rock, Modern Rock, Classic Rock, Metal; too many options.
