Hello Everyone,

I am going to be a starting newish build (transferring fish and corals from older tank) to a new 180G - six feet long and three feet wide tank. I currently have a 120G that houses two tangs - Yellow and a Convict. I would like to add two additional tangs once the 180G is up and running - Naso and Chocolate. I love the dimensions of upcoming build with great length and width. I’m looking for some advice or recommendations from those of you with experience keeping multiple tangs together. Appreciate any insights!

Thanks!

I kept a purple, yellow, naso, convict and hippo in a standard 72x24x24" 180g for several years with no issues before moving to an 84x30x25" . The difference between 24" and 30" was huge for me. 72x36" should be pretty awesome. I have no experience with a chocolate.
Sounds great, thanks! The 120G I have now is 48 x 24 so I'm really looking forward to the 60 x 30. I figure it should be large enough to house four tangs, with the Naso becoming the largest. From my understanding, it sounds like the Yellow's can be the more aggressive out of the bunch, so fingers crossed they should be fine. I planned on adding all four at the same time which should limit aggression.

I think you can do more :)
Well I mean, they'll be more fish. Lol. The other larger fish I'll be adding are two Swallowtail Angelfish - one male and one female. Outside of that, smaller fish to name a few, like a handful of wrasses and a trio of anthers coming from the 120G.

I have 3 tangs in mine. Yellow, Purple and Tomini - Yellow and Purple from Biota and the Tomini from LFS.
150 Gallon MT, 240 TWV.
How is the purple tang from Biota? My Yellow is a Biota as well and he's been fantastic. Had him/her over a year and an absolute gorgeous fish.

Love it! Where you sourcing your fish from?

I actually upgraded the 180 for the fish. I have 8 tangs in the new tank.

I think you’ll be fine! Convict and chocolate could have initial issues bc they’re both Acanthurus but they’re both on the chill side for acanthurus. It’s also a good sized tank! I had a similar dimension tank and it held a ton of fish happily and healthily. I don’t recall 100 percent because it’s been a long while, but think I had 6 or so tangs, and multiple butterflies. Corals did well too. The dims allowed for a great aquascape!

My current 120G has:

2 stormtrooper clowns
3 Chromis
3 Lyertail Anthias
Flame Hawkfish
Starcki Damsel
Yellow Tang
Convict Tang
Mystery Wrasse
Dusky Brunneus Wrasse
Bluestar Leopard Wrasse
Bangaii Cardinal (used to have three but she prefers to be a party of one)
Royal Gramma

Plan on adding the following to the new build:

Chocolate Tang
Naso Tang
3 Evansi Anthias
2 Swallowtail Angels (male and female)

It's going to be quite the tankful, but my fingers crossed it should be fine.

I used to source my fish from a LFS, but lately have come from World Wide Corals. I quarantine all my new arrivals for 14 days. But with the new additions coming to the 180G I'm going with Marine Collectors since they doing an excellent job of quarantining.

Very nice — love your tang gang! I have a “regular” naso & a blonde naso. They are getting along well. These guys grow fast!

Awesome, glad to hear! I'm upgrading my tank for my corals. My tank is SPS dominated and went a bit crazy ordering Acroporas in the beginning. Now they're banging into one another and I need more room.

Can I sway you to go with Dr Reef? I’m friends with Mike and the fish are absolutely amazing.

I have recent video on the last page of my tank thread if you want to see how well they all get along. It's actually quite a peaceful tank considering the number of tangs.
Will check now! I’m getting my Achilles in today

I appreciate the recommendation, but I've had great conversations with Marine Collectors and just feel comfortable going with him. But I'll keep Dr Reef in mind if there is something Marine Collectors can't get.

@shawnriv I have 4 tangs (naso, yellow, purple, and achilles) in my 3x3 150gal cube and they do ok — you should be fine. If (and when) they outgrow your tank, then it’s a perfect justification to a bigger tank upgrade! lol

Which of the four would you say is the most aggressive? Achilles Tangs are quite expensive, but like that they seem to be smaller than Naso's.
