It's been awhile since I popped into this thread, so I didn't see this until now.
When you put the ball valves at the base of your display and you have a significant run of plumbing afterwards you will find that it can run less quietly as that restriction at the top will lead to a pipe that is not full of water. If the main gate valve is at the exit the pipe fills up with water before that and runs more silently.

I originally had the gate valve directly underneath my tank and ended up moving it to the shed outside. I just left the original one under the display and keep it completely open.

It's easy enough to get the flow correct? Even in another room at the sump by simply removing the bottom part of the stand pipe of the secondary drain and closing the valve on the main pipe and watch the second pipe for a small trickle to start.

The main drain was making noise about the same volume as Niagara Falls. The old airline tubing in the drain line trick has it almost silent. I will be playing with it until it is silent. Keep in mind there is a 13-foot drop to the sump so there is a lot of air to displace.

Even though my sump is in the basement and my stand is empty of equipment I wanted to take a precaution for under the tank in the stand. There was one joint under the tank that some genius forgot to glue (me). I bought some pond liner for my tank stand base. It creates a 2-1/2" waterproof lip around the perimeter. There is a passageway from the stand base to the garage which is how the water would drain off. Just thought it was wise to avoid any potential damage to the hardwood floor in the room.

Look into Lifereef Skimmers, thye are upgradeable and Jeff is great to work with, you can use any pump and will last a lifetime

RK2 are great also , similar concept as Life Reef can use any pump that matches flow . I am excited, how is it working for you

I envy you NYers that have basements. That's a foreign concept to SoCal reefers. That's like having a whole fish room by itself with all that space. I have to live with a tiny outdoor rubbermaid shed that can only fit my water barrels.

At this stage of my life I wouldn't have done this build if I couldnt have a remote sump. The ability to access all of the equipment without kneeling down is a godsend. Don't be too jealous because it is 19 degrees and there are no palm trees

Finally have the drains silenced and bringing the water up to temperature then I will be mixing salt in 5 gal buckets which I will slurry into the sump.

I live in Massachusetts , no basement, 20 degrees out and getting 5 inches of snow....lol. I will swap with you In Cali....LOL

I am really liking the Milwaukee Digital seawater refractometer. Very easy to perform consistent tests albeit not yet verified against another source. It does read the calibrating solution accurately. I did a series of slurries with Nyos salt yesterday. Nyos is impressive in its ability to mix very rapidly with no residue at 77 degrees. Today I will bring the system up from 1.018 to 1.026 Waiting to hear from KP Aquatics regarding live rock to seed the sump. The sump rock will be in the refugium chamber which is 31x24x18. I will be adding live sand to this chamber to bolster biological media plus I will isolate some oddities there as well.
