Haven't posted in a while so wanted to add a six month update....
Tank is coming along nicely. Finally got through the ugly phase(s) and things seem to be running smoothly (which means the wheels will probably come off any day now...lol). Anyhow, I currently have the following fish who all seem to be cohabitating together fairly well:
(1) Whitetail Bristletooth tang (Nom Nom) who is more of a carnivore than a herbivore and so far completely refuses to eat nori. She chomps all day on the glass and rocks, but loves her some meaty foods and is certainly the top of the food chain in the tank.
(1) Lawnmower blenny (John Deere aka The Creature from the Black Lagoon or TC for short) who only chomps on rocks and glass and never ever eats fed stuff. He is super mellow and has to watch over his shoulder frequently to make sure Nom Nom isn't rolling in on him.
(1) Midas Blenny (King Ralph) who used to run the show, but definitely had his top-dog status ripped away by Nom Nom. He's a really fun fish, but he had to move from his former lair when Nom Nom took over his rock.
(1) Sixline Wrasse (Hot Lips) who may be small, but can be a little you-know-what to everybody else. The addition of Nom Nom cooled her jets somewhat. She stays busy hunting the numerous amphipods and copepods that are living and thriving in the sump and tank.
(1) Orchid Dottyback (Iris) who also actively hunts for the pods and also has a really curious and sweet personality.
(1) Flame Hawkfish (Hawkeye #2) who replaced our original hawkfish who committed Hari Kari by jumping out of the tank when hurricane Milton's eye passed over my house last month. I'm thinking the low pressure bump freaked him out...at least that's my hypothesis. The new Hawkeye doesn't have as good a personality as the former, but maybe he will improve as time goes by. He likes to hunt the pods too.
(2) Picasso Clownfish (Barnum and Bailey) who also have great personalities and have improbably hosted a pile of empty shells and a couple hermit crabs that come over and hang out with them. They pretty much like to stick in the left front corner of the tank, but they have big personalities and seem to get along with everybody.
We have a bunch of corals that are finally growing and prospering. I've only started the first foray into SPS's (with several monti species, birdsnest and stylo) and have really gone heavy on the LPS's: primarily zoas, chalices, blastos and Euphillia as well as mushrooms and some pretty rock anemone selections).
We have a ton of inverts including (2) cleaner shrimp, (3) fighting conchs, (1) tiger conch, (4) turbos, (4) tuxedo urchins, (1) emerald crab, dozens of narcissus snails, trochus and other assorted snails as well as 40-50 various-sized hermits.
I'm shocked by the diversity of stuff that I did not put in the aquarium that have showed up in the past month or two. I have my run ends with aptaisia from here and there, but I've been zapping them every time they show up. I have hundreds if not, thousands of teeny tiny pineapple sponges in my sump, and now in my display tank. I also have a gazillion small isopods that are mostly in the rocks, but like to come up on the glass and eat the algae (and get chomped by the hunters) Tube worms and tiny feather dusters are also showing up as well as some small wiggly, bristle worm looking critters. When I shine a light at night through the water column, it's kind of shocking how much stuff is in there. It almost looks like it's snowing, I feed Ocean Magic from Algae Barn, which is a really high-quality phytoplankton and everybody seems to be loving it.
I love the aquarium and still growing in this Hobby which is definitely THE MOST time-consuming thing I've ever done. My wife says I love the tank more than her...lol
Placed my last order for fish and some inverts. Picking up a small foxface and some dwarf tube worms and a coco worm. Needed a few more snails and hermits.
Think I am fully stocked in the way of coral.
Everything seems to growing well and my parameters have been holding (mostly) steady for the past few weeks. If I were to complain about anything it would be these freaking hydroids I'm battling. They showed up a month or so ago and they are a major pain in the ***!
Bought some nice Acro frags from Top Shelf when they were running the Black Friday sale:
WWC Yellow Tip
Paletta Pink Tip
GARF Bonsai
ORA Pearlberry
Green Slimer
TSA Red Robin
JF Fox Flame
Also made the foray into Goni's and have too many corals to count....lol.
There are some digi's in there, but they aren't the bad ones. It's the tiny, thin-stalked hydroid with the little top that looks like polyp with stingers. They are aggravating the hell out of some of my corals. Especially Zoas..
Tank update....
Things are going well. I have had a little spike in my PO4 numbers recently and have ordered a reactor to run PhosBan in to get those back into line. It's bizarre because I haven't changed my feeding habits and my NO3 numbers are nice and low (4-5). I am running a 'fuge and all other parameters are excellent and steady. Oh well....expect the unexpected in this hobby
