Hi guys,

I have an established 80 gallon tank with a flame Angel in it, I am wanting to add a coral beauty to it but wanted to see if this is asking for trouble.

Does anyone have experience with having these two types of fish in the same tank? Would my tank be big enough where they would be able to coexist? I have a decent amount of hiding spots in the rock work.

Thanks!

It may work but you will likely want to move the rockwork around prior to adding the Coral Beauty for a better chance of success. Also a mirror, angels are easily fooled by them!

Hard to say for sure. Have a backup plan if you try it. I keep both but in an 84x30x25" tank that has quite a few larger fish which I think helps distract the angels. I also have other tanks to move fish around if needed.

I do. I have LOTS of rock work for them to go around. I also have a baby Emperor Angel in the tank w/ them. The first 24 hours, the coral beauty and flame angel chased one another a LOT. There was a bit of nipping in each direction. The next day, they got along until the lights went out and the coral beauty chased the flame angel out of the rock work, regardless of where they were. Day after that they just kind of agreed to stay away from one another.

Now, 2 months later, they're fast friends. They hang out together. All 3 angels do actually.

Also - if you have an established angel, an acclimation box with a place for the new angel to hide, like a pipe T or corner can not be overstated. It will give them a place to hide.

Ok thanks, that was my next question was the acclimation box. The way my tank is setup it will be very tough to move rock work around so I was thinking of the acclimation box route. Should the acclimation box be hidden away out of plain view out in the open?

Also, here’s the two dwarfs I currently have mixed, a Multicolour and African Flame Back. The Flame Back is due to be removed and placed into another tank seeing as he can be nasty and I still have wrasses I’d like to add.

Also - all of this. My coral beauty, rest her soul...spends a lot of time fighting her reflection in the glass. I love her but she's dumb as a rock.

With acclimation boxes, always have them in view. If you hide them it will defeat the point as the fish can’t see each other constantly and get used to each other.

My Flame Back is currently battling his reflection but it’s working to the Multicolour’s advantage as she’s now exploring the tank quite happily behind his back.

I just put mine in the front of the tank - it's a hang on the glass one. I put 2 pvc T's in the box with the new angel that are big enough for them. This doesn't stop the established angel from attacking the side of the box, but the new angel has a spot to hide from them to keep stress down.

Ok thanks for all the tips guys! Regarding the mirror, would I set that up pretty much as soon as I put the Coral Beauty in there?

I do have a small quarantine tank that I could potentially use to separate them if things get too spicy in there when I add the CB

Put it in right before you release the new angel from acclimation. It will serve as a distraction. Once the established angel is distracted, release the new.

Also, I feed at the same time I release - that helps distract everyone.

I put the mirror on prior to the introduction to get him distracted. Once that happens, release the beast!

For clarity - all 3 of mine are all very small juveniles in a 70gallon. That said, all 3 will be moving to a 200 gallon this coming summer, but that's mainly because of the emperor angel. However, since they're all 3 bonded now, all 3 are going together.
