Got an order of tangs in today. 3 of the 4 are super healthy looking and active however the Atlantic blue looks super rough. He was laying on his side in the bag, and in the acclimation bin. Once acclimated he is laying in the acclimation box, breathing is very slow and labored. I have a picture of him below, doesnt look like he has anything but he is just paper thin. Any hope for him? By the way the white stuff in the box is sand, dropped it when I went to put it in and sand got all in it.

These are very tough pics to view to make assessment but did you acclimate and how and for how long?
Additionally, add air stone, turn down white intensity and allow fish to settle in.

Yeah apologies I realized they were not good after I posted. Drip acclimation for an hour and a halfish. Ill get better pictures when I return home. And I always run an airstone in the tank, also running coppersafe as a precaution

Where did you get them from?

Also if they were in a bag for a long time during transport drip acclimation is harmful. You need to do a quick acclimation and drop them in. It has to do with ammonia build up. I can explain further if you’re interested.

This may be multi factorial so don’t blame yourself. I really like the acclimation method Dr. Reef has on their website. I think it is more accurate than what NY aquatics is suggesting and I know others on this site who share the same idea.

One and half is somewhat excessive not to say issue but after 20 min float and adjust salinity and take it from there

I don’t know anything about NY aquatics so I can’t comment on them. What I can say is that there are vendors that will not ship out a fish unless they are in top form.

Gotcha thank you. And the tang passed while I was running errands. The other 3 are very active and healthy though!

Yeah, bummer. He was cool, half yellow half blue. Do you think I could try to add another? Plan was just these 4 tangs and them all go in together. (The purple tang, sohal and white tail). Really love atlantic blues…but I know how purples and sohals are which is why I wanted them all introduced together. Dont want the sohal and purple to kill another tang once they are established

An Atlantic species, I find them touchy and if you acquire one, try to get one you can see breathe, eat and interact with other fish if a\applicable in the store tank. Those 2 tangs mentioned are jerks once territory is established

Yeah thats why I wanted to put all the tangs I wanted on the list in at once. And I was planning on that with the Atlantic, sometimes my LFS gets one. I wanted 4 tangs with the last being either a powder blue, atlantic blue, or lieutenant tang. I just wasnt sure if I find a healthy one of these guys in the store if I could add it with having those two tangs because of their temper. If there is a high probability those two (really the sohal) would murder a new tang then I wont add one or if you had an approx time frame adding one last tang was doable in?
