Do it because you like it, or believe in it, don't because you are doing something else, or know it is wrong, and a waste of time.
I don't think personal preference is the real issue here. Doug has gone on several of the most popular podcasts and spread misinformation and tried to scare people into not using other effective methods and parameters. He has said only to use FMs balling light formula for Bolus, before anyone defends him as not selling anything.
As a service company owner, I am hired to fix reef tanks. I see the impact that misinformation has on people trying to succeed in the hobby. Salesman say "Follow this formula and you will succeed." But new hobbyists often fail because they have no idea why they are doing those things. Aquarium books are rarely printed anymore, and most people turn to youtube and social media for information. So fact checking videos on YouTube becomes important. Bolus technique is 99% Balling method so it's not likely going to wreck aquariums. But misinformation and suppression of other ideas and methods really irks me.

I love listening to Craig. Dry humor and easy to understand. But yes, he doesn't shout buzzwords and sales pitches at you, so he doesn't get the youtube notoriety.
Don’t get me wrong. I do too. It’s just that in the age of influencers…and those actually influenced by them, I’m not sure how big of a following there would be…lemming wise

I don't know if I ever heard Randy speak. I have heard Craig speak on many occasions. You're right that he has that slow monotonous drawl, however, I never found that annoying. I always thought that his pauses are his process to search for the best word or phrase to convey his thoughts, in my mind is appreciated. With that said, I think that 90% of viewers, when presented both sides would be able to ascertain who is blowing smoke.
My words probably didn’t come off as intended with this. I’m definitely a fan and have much respect for folks like Craig and Randy.

That said, you have more faith than I regarding who the YouTube generation would believe and follow! Ha

I’d listen all day long myself. But those that bought a Sham Wow, would have bought it no matter what

I like to keep things rather simple. Fact checking every socialite, content posted, and product market speak sounds exhausting. Also it is a bit selective in my opinion. Thus my comment "Do it because you like it, or believe in it, don't because you are doing something else, or know it is wrong, and a waste of time".

Not saying you are wrong but social media is here. At some point the onus is on the hobbyist and they will either learn by their mistakes or get out of the hobby. Blunt, I know. No offense.

I think the take away, for me at least, is that this seems to be touted as something ground breaking and new. When in fact it's improper amounts of bicarbonate added to a system to arrive at a wrong conclusion and then building an entire hypothesis around it.

I too try to give the person the benefit of the doubt and look at it like a puzzle in order to apply logic so that I can understand their position.

One thought that occurred to me is that this could've been an honest mistake when they first mixed a batch of bicarbonate. Thinking that the concentration was higher but test results indicate that some were being suppressed. One could conclude that if armed with the proper knowledge they would've realized the impossibility and caught the error quickly. (Which is funny btw, when Doug asked Keith to explain why dumping a bunch of bicarbonate resulted in lower than expected readings, my immediate thought was, you didn't actually dump as much as you thought) But instead came up with alternate theories to make it make sense. I'm sure this pitfall has a name and is probably very common in certain fields.

Of course I'm basing my conclusions solely on the evidence that Randy and others had laid out numerous times in this thread. And as of right now, no one has challenged those positions with evidence to prove otherwise.

This is where, in my mind it goes way wrong. By now they should've realized their mistakes, and have a few options to move forward. Admit the honest mistake or double down.

Unfortunately, this is one of those occasions where companies reputation, product sales and individual egos play a role in how to move forward.

Getting back to the point, It certainly appears that this is another way of doing the same thing. There is nothing new here, except outlandish claims to support your purchasing decisions. Maintaining high pH and alkalinity will achieve the same results. The trace element thing isn't new either, they just claim to have the better recipe... complete marketing.

That's another recent development as earlier in the Bolus journey they reckoned any nice clean bicarb should work.

Edit - by "work" I mean to have whatever benefits are claimed by Bolus, even if evidence is none existent.

At 57 minutes into the ReefBum interview Doug says " I Stress, people will say, that's an interesting idea. I will try that with my Triton or whatever. Don't! You have to use the right stuff. And the right stuff is Fauna Marin Balling Light."

The only tape of me speaking that I am aware of is from a MACNA in Boston, and I’m not sure it is publicly available anywhere.

From 6:30 - 8:20 David asks Claude specifically about the potential spike in alkalinity. Claude responds with, and I'm paraphrasing, that seawater chemists now understand what happens and although it may appear you are dosing 2 dKH, it's actually 1 dKH because it comes back throughout the day because of seawater combining rock surface and organics in the aquarium. I did not hear reference to alkalinity spike anywhere else in the video. Interesting though, Claude acknowledges the "many posts on Reef2Reef" ;)

"We don't need to get too deep into the chemistry." Absolutely. Why would we need to do that while discussing *checks notes* ummm chemistry.
I thought the same thing when it was dismissed equally in the Beyond the Reef podcast
