I just got a brand new Reef Octo 140 calcium reactor and when I set it up, I noticed it was full of air bubbles and the pump sounds like it’s going to explode. I cleaned out the debris from the media of course. I’m nervous to let the pump go to purge out the air and also nervous to accidentally add a crap ton of alk into the tank. What do I do? Thanks.

Did you pre-soak the media? I find this is the number one issue with extra air (after checking all seals/ports).
Yeah that was right after presoaking it for about 10 minutes. But it’s all clear now. Just let it burp the air out without the co2 running and the effluent fully open.

I don’t think 10 minutes is going to do the job, it has to soak until all the air is released. Depending on media, this can take some time (overnight possibly). When I’m going to add media, I usually soak it in RO overnight, then add the following day. If using media like reborn, you’ll have to let it soak for a while. There’s a lot of places on the skeletons that traps air, especially porous media.

That makes sense. My boss at the fish shop didn’t tell me when he helped me set it up. But now I know for when I add media. Thanks.
