I had this one for a while, but it was taken out along with a few other clams by an unknown pathogen last year. I managed to save my green squamosa with an OA treatment. I lost two derasas, two maximas, one squamosa and the hippopus.
Yeah, it went through them pretty fast. Really bummed about the hippopus and the small squammie.
Ah I'm sorry. Glad you were able to save the green squamosa though. When you feel the pathogen is out and you're ready to add, let me know and you can have that little derasa I've got in the pico.
Thanks! I have the green squammie back in the 90 and it’s doing well. I had to move my teal crocea over, which may need the OA treatment? I’m going to hold off adding any clams until I “clear” the tank. But I’ll keep you posted.
What is the OA treatment?
Oxolinic acid. I kind of used the protocol for koi and used it as my base treatment. I used a 10g as my QT, but only used roughly 5g. I halved the dose and treated/dosed every other day for a total of 3 doses. I observed the clam for another day or two, then acclimated back to the display. The clam had adequate lighting for the entire treatment (slightly less than my display), so I kept it under optimal conditions. I used new fresh saltwater for the QT. I did add some phyto during QT every other day as a source of nitrogen.
I love the darker green ones too. I would like to have a dark green one and a gold one.I had this Hippos for years. Very hardy clam, and beautiful coloration. I got the clam from DD. Hopefully when they start stocking then again in the spring and summer I can pick up another.
That's interesting I've never heard of Oxolinic acid treatment, do you have a reference journal or papers I could read about this treatment? it would be constructive for me to learn more
No, unfortunately, I came up with it myself. I’ve heard other people treating corals and possibly clams with a bunch of things and figured I would try OA on its own to see if it works for unknown issues. I know a few people that used a combo of amoxicillin, OA, cipro and something else I forget. But with using so many things, it’s hard to isolate which thing actually worked. I might have another clam that’s not growing, so I might try it again? The symptom that seems to be the main issue is the clam just stops growing, while other clams are doing just fine and water parameters are unchanged. There are no pests and no symptoms of PMD.
