Hello,

Need help right away! My clownfish has white mucus, and is breathing heavy. I woke up this morning with cloudy water and wondered why. My 6 line wrasse died on me so now my ammonia is prob spiked. I don’t have anymore salt for a new water change atm, so I dosed some seachem prime to give me some time. WHAT DO I DO?

Also, do I take my clownfish and brush off the mucus? I’m afraid I think it’s ammonia poisoning

Did you test ammonia levels? What were they?
Is the clownfish new or have you had it for a while?
Sorry this happened to you :(
If it was ammonia the prime may help, but ideally getting that water out is best
Is there a reefer near you that would borrow you some saltwater or a LFS you can purchase some from?

I quarantine all of my fish before putting them into the main tank.
My tank has been established for about a year now.
I recently put in a 6 line wrasse a month ago, and just yesterday I went to reef palooza New York and picked up some corals. I dipped all of them and put them in. When I woke up, my wrasse was dead, and the water was cloudy.

I have had this clownfish ever since I started my tank. It was my first fish. I don’t think there are any reefers that would help me with this. At least not anyone close. I may try and get some salt mix today and mix my own water, or I can go to my LFS and get some premixed saltwater.

I have a UV sterilizer in the back of my tank. Would that help clear out the cloudiness?

Levels:

Ammonia: around 2.5 ppm to 1 or 2 ppm. (Hard to tell)
Nitrite: 2.0 ppm
Nitrate: 40 to 80 ppm (Oh Boy)

Need more information....

Parameters?
How long has the tank been established?
Any recent additions?
Do you quarantine?

White mucus is the symptom of brooklynella, which is especially common in clownfish. How long have you had the clown and what have you added recently?

Do clownfish get brooklynella from ammonia? Also, look at the post above. It clarifies everything that you asked. I’ve had the clownfish ever since my tank was up. It’s been up for about a year.

Did you test ammonia before adding prime? After adding prime you will get false positives with many test kits.

Ammonia poisoning won’t cause brooklynella but the symptoms of poisoning are a bit different. Personally, I wouldn’t take chances and would treat for brook. Ideally start with a methylene blue bath which may help with ammonia poisoning and is a mild antiseptic.

I did the wrong thing by adding prime to the tank first because I was worried. I want to act fast. The reading is probably a little off.

Also, for the methylene blue bath, do you do it in a bowl with an aerater? How does it work? And how many times do I do it? Is brooklynella easy to get rid of, or really tuff?

For methylene blue a 30min bath in a bucket, dose 5ml per 5 gallon.

It is possible that it’s not brooklynella, without taking a sample no visual confirmation is 100%.

Is the mucus peeling? Google some images of brook. In any event MB is one of the only anecdotal treatments for ammonia burns too.

I removed the six line this morning. Will the water clear up? I have a UV t goes through my pump.
It is likely that the issue came in with the corals and it is likely Brook, the sixline dying overnight is odd though. I'm going to guess false reading on the ammonia, that or there is something dead in the aquarium that needs to be removed.

You it'd the wrasse before going into the display as well right? Its possible a coral carried in a parasite.

Also, how else can I treat the brooklynella. I have no solutions atm, so I did a freshwater dip and the mucus came off. I guess that’s a good first step. I will try the methylene blue as well.
