This is the replacement i had gotten which has proven to be eating flakes at the lfs, but currently he's only grazing the rocks like a cow non stop, he's been eating mainly coralline and green hair algae aswell as cyano, is this a good start or should I try more harder to get him on the non veg?

This is my second attempt with the convict and i really do want it to work

Why do you doubt that natural grazing is insufficient?
It's because many recommend to feed tangs meaty foods to make sure that all of their dietary needs are fulfilled and it's because of that I was just a bit concerned aswell as the added issue of convict tangs being delicate and many cases of them not eating and slowly withering away added to my anxiety

But apologies, I might just be overthinking things since the tang is indeed just a day old in my tank, losing the first tang has definitely added to that anxiety Lol

If fish is eating, you are overthinking it.

Just more (non scientific) side info: tangs sort of have niches according to mouth shape: some graze, some patrol, some spend all day kissing the glass…
Its also individual preference: some of mine eat nori, others wont touch it…some will destroy ulva and ogo, others wont even sniff at it …
No rhyme nor reason that I can document

At a day old, too soon to be concerned. I think all tangs are constantly grazing. Keep an eye on his belly. If it looks thin or sunken, I would be concerned. My convict voraciously attacks pellets, nori, chopped clams...practically anything I put in the tank including my hand.

Keep nori on an algae clip or rubber band it to a rock. It may take a while for the fish to start eating it.
