THE BREAKDOWN

Hello! I suppose I should re-introduce myself. I’ve been in the hobby for three years. In that time I’ve learned a ton, and it was finally time for a proper system with a sump. I got a bonus this year so I took the plunge.

I wanted something big enough for “serious” reefing, while being small enough to manage the logistics of water because I HATE water changes. I have a Waterbox 10 cube that I retired and I loved the quality, so I went with the 4820.

I’m on hour day four of breaking down the old tank, which was a great opportunity to do a rip clean of everything. It needed it. The main floor of my house is currently a war zone, but here’s some progress pics for ya.

THE NEW BUILD

This is as far as I’ve gotten with the new system. The quality of the cabinet and assembly instructions aren’t quite what I was expecting, but otherwise I continue to be happy with Waterbox. The aquarium doesn’t sit against a wall, however the peninsula setup is the best match for how the space works. Everyone enjoys this location because it’s in the middle of a large open space and it functions as a room divider.

Next up is deep cleaning the old sand, making water (Synbiotic by Tropic Marin) and getting the livestock in.

Ooooooo, what are your plans with the tank?
My plan right now is to focus mainly on SPS now that I have mastered growing them. I’d like to try Acropora, but right now I’m just happy to have a system that’s rimless, with a sump, and has the capacity to do more and house more interesting fish.

It’s full!

It doesn’t leak!

I’m exhausted! That was an incredibly stressful week. My house is a f***ing disaster. Who knew this hobby could be so time consuming and expensive? Oh wait, everyone.

Tank transfer complete with no loss of livestock! Time to clean up and rest. This is not the final aquascape. I need time to work on the existing rocks, frags, etc so for now easy access is paramount.

I will post actual tank data and specs soon.

Looks great. Have mine on order now. Are those Nicrew 100 watts above the tank? Planning on using 2 150's cause I already had 1 and wanted it to be visually balanced. Will keep checking back to see how things progress while I am waiting.
Best of luck

Let there be light. Everything is finally opening back up. Water still a little cloudy, but improving. Foxface has the zoomies after being in a 10 gallon for 5 nights.

They are. For what you pay, they will grow anything. I never had mine above 50% in my old tank, and SPS grew like crazy.

I’m in a waiting phase now, so prob won’t be posting every day. When you get your tank, feel free to DM me. It has quirks. You should know about them lol.

Day 7 of the tank running.

IMG_7153.jpeg

The sump is finally respectable. The Waterbox filter sock filled with sediment and was slowing down the sump flow rate. It was so confusing since this is my first sump. I hate filter socks anyhow so I pitched it. When I replaced it with the filter cup from BRS, the flow went back to normal. I have it weighted with a bit of rubble and then full of filter floss. So much better.

The SPS are recovering surprisingly quickly. One of the Birdsnest colonies has tissue peeling off the skeleton despite full polyp extension. I decided not to intervene. These coral have had enough abuse lately.

And there’s diatoms! Here we gooooo.

Looks awesome man congrats on the upgrade!

How are you getting electricity to the tank with it being where it is?
