So I two weeks ago had my tropic Marin hydrometer break inside my rodi trash can. In the process of trying to create more salt water I believe that a few pieces of the metal inside the hydrometer remained (I.e water had turned brownish reddish color and now small rust looking spots are on the bottom of the can)

Do we know what metal is used in the ballast and also what’s the best method for ‘sterilizing’ the can after this had occurred? As I scrolled the internet it mentioned lead for another hydrometer. Either way. Just need the advice or will dawn soap and water do the trick.

I would just clean the brute and call it a day. I may be wrong but I'm not aware of the plastic brutes are made of being able to absorb chemicals.
To my knowledge, the Brute pails are chemically inert, that's why we use them. I agree, rinse it out, and I'm sure you'll be fine.
