How fast do you go through your ATO water?

With Hewbie’s new home and the sump area being really warm until I can get the carpenter to install the cooling fan. I discovered I’m going through 2-4 gallons of water every other day or so. Which seems like absolute insanity to me. How much do you go through? The tank is a 120 with sump and around every other day I’m filling the 5 gallon ATO container.

Mine is about 5-7 gallons every two days. But I dont use ATO… I just run the ro line straight to the sump and top off from there

this is going to vary a lot
(question is too subjective)

but 25g rodi lasts me a month on a 90
I know it is. And I hope that adding a cooling fan to the sump area cools it off and there’s less evaporation.

There’s a lot of variables at play here. It will vary depending on climate and how dry the air is, how open the tank is to allow evaporation along with other things. On my 135gal I’m adding around 5 gals every week now. A couple months ago and it was 5 gals every 2-3 weeks. The air gets much drier in my house during the winter, especially when burning wood in the wood stove. My stand is sealed pretty good and I’ve got a solid cover over my tank to limit the evaporation. I have a 19 gal freshwater tank in the same area and I’m adding probably 1 gal to that once a week, but the cover on that is more open.

you might get more evap because of the fan…

chiller might be the better route,
but not the cheapest
That doesn’t make sense to me but either way I was going to add one because it does get very warm under the sump and it’s closed in. So to prevent mold etc. I am adding one. Part of the reason I’m getting so much now is because the sump is really warm and humid.

The air flow across the water surface is going pick up more evaporation than stagnant air.

Interesting I didn’t realize this.
Adding a fan (or two) over a sump will drop the tank temp 2-3 degrees through evaporation. I run two computer fans over my sump during the summer to keep the tank at 75 but that also means I go through more RO water…

I’m in Colorado as well. Very dry here right now.

I go through 1.5 to 2 gal per day on my 165 gal reef and 1/2 gal per day on my 240 gal FOWLR (which has glass tops). I have to fill up my reef ATO every 4-5 days. Less evaporation in the summer though.
