I like this. Your Hydros setup looks very much like what I envisioned as a Phase 1 except I'm still not sold on using the Hydros WiFi strips for anything critical. I didn't realize the Reef Outfit Smart Dosing Containers were available with Sense Port connectors. Sweet.
The Wi-Fi strips need a dedicated 2.4 GHz connection. @Connor At CoralVue gave me some suggestions if you use them for critical things like heater controls.

I do have a dedicated 2.4 for IoT devices, although I may need to modify the setup since they probably need to be able to see the controller. Right now my IoT vlan has device isolation which may not work for this setup--not sure. It's my understanding that if the controller/strip communication goes down the outlets stay in their current state. Is that true? I also assume that they only need the internet for programming and all state changes are only on internal lan. Also true?

Yes. Mine stay in whichever power state they were in. I will also need add that I lose connection maybe 3 times daily max and only once has been for more than 15 minutes. Typically it's less than a minute or 2.

When the strip loses connection, since it is not connected to the Hydros through a wired connection, the two systems cannot talk to each other. All of the Hydros controllers are wired and can communicate that way - any WiFi connected devices are interrupted if the wifi drops.

Fun story with that. I won their smart doser and the. Helped them test their wiring with the Hydros sense ports to configure their new sense port plugs :)

That is a bit concerning. The XP8 seems like the better choice over the wifi strips in the case of an internet blackout or a power outage. Then the Hydros can't turn on your heaters or fans...

@Connor At CoralVue if there is a power outage and emergency battery backup kicks in to power the Hydros controllers, will they still sense and communicate between them (e.g., temp drops, turn on heater) even with wifi down?

My question is really if the internet goes out but your internal WiFi stays up do the strips still respond to event changes? I know the whole setup needs the internet for program changes. I'm more concerned with internet outages since my internal network and WiFi are fairly solid.

Good question. If battery backup keeps the network running but no internet service is provided, @Connor At CoralVue do the Hydros controllers/wifi devices still talk to one another?

Thanks!!

I suppose I could test it when I get home later... All I'd have to do is unplug the Internet and leave the router plugged in. As long as I'm on Wi-Fi I should still be able to send and receive from the Hydros.

There are routers that throw a 2.4 and 5. I have one. Run all the tank stuff on the 2.4 and house stuff on 5g.

I'll expect the report on my desk tomorrow AM. Yes, we work weekends at this outfit.

In that case, have it on my desk by the end of the fiscal year.

I'm using one Hydros wifi strip but not for anything critical. It keeps disconnecting from my wifi. I installed a dedicated 2.4ghz access point but it must still be trying to get on the main dual band router somehow. I'm sure it's a configuration problem that is somehow my fault but it's frustrating.

@JoJosReef, I really like the controller board.

I was told to make sure it connects to the access point (give it a different name) and not the regular 2.4.

I thought that I had done that but now I'm going to have to go back and check the connection from the Minnow and see what it is. All I'm running is a Minnow and one wifi power strip.

Ok, I'll run a few more tests when I get back home but at this time it looks like I can't connect to Hydros even when I'm on Wi-Fi if the internet access is down but the router is up.

There's a possibility I was on the 5 GHz and not the 2.4 GHz.
