Hi! I posted yesterday but it was hard to see what I was asking about since the leather was fully open. The lights are just now coming on so it’s closed so this may be more helpful. The tips of my leather are suddenly grayish. When it’s open it’s very full and happy otherwise. Any ideas?

It sounds like your leather coral may be experiencing a few possible issues that could cause the grayish tips you're seeing. Here are a few considerations:

  1. Physical Damage: Sometimes leather corals can suffer from physical damage due to water flow or contact with other corals. This can lead to tissue injury, which might cause the tips to appear gray or discolored.
  2. Mucus Production: Corals, including leathers, produce mucus as a natural defense mechanism or when stressed. If your leather is producing extra mucus, it might make the tips appear discolored.
  3. Water Quality: Check your water parameters, including pH, salinity, ammonium, nitrites, and nitrates. Sudden changes in water quality can stress corals and lead to discoloration.
  4. Light Intensity: If the coral is receiving too much light or not enough, it can affect its coloration. Ensure that it's within the appropriate light range for a leather coral.
  5. Pests or Infection: Look closely for any pests or signs of infection. Sometimes a fungal or bacterial issue can cause areas of the coral to discolor.
  6. Nutrient Imbalance: Excess nutrients in the water can lead to algal blooms, which could cover parts of the coral and affect its appearance.
If it remains otherwise healthy and reopens fully later, it might just be a temporary issue. However, if the discoloration progresses or you observe other symptoms, further investigation may be warranted. Monitor the coral and keep an eye on the water parameters to ensure everything is stable.

This is very helpful, thank you!
