Hi all, I’ve recently added a juvenile black Leopard wrasse into my tank and I’m searching for more information about their long-time care.

After two days of being MIA, it popped up suddenly and ever since (it’s now been a week it’s been there), it’s been out for 6-8 hours roaming the tank. To my absolute delight it’s eating super well (frozen mysis, brine shrimp and cyclopods enriched with selcon) but had yet to touch prepared foods.

I’m wondering how to keep it in top shape if it never ends up eating flakes/pellets? Is enriched frozen foods enough for it to be healthy? Are pods necessary? Also, is there any way to gender it when it’s a juvenile or do I only need for it to develop its colours?

Thank you for any help and advice beyond my questions! :)

My wrasses don’t eat pellets/flake unless I run out of frozen, until then I feed frozen.
Here’s just how fat some of them truly are.

Quality frozen is fine (LRS) but I have several leopards and they all eat dry foods too. Wrasses are pigs and once settled would probably eat anything you throw in there, even hot red pepper flakes.

They look amazing!! Especially that white and red one, that’s a gorgeous fish.

Glad to know he’ll be fine with just frozen, even just after 4 days of accepting food he’s always got a full, round belly now

Awesome, I’ll restart giving pellets when he’s awake to see if he catches on. I got a bit scared when I was told they were expert only because of their reluctance to eat but I’m glad that they can actually eat anything like other wrasses aha

The expert only is because they are poor shippers and don't handle most home set up quarantine well. Probably some handling issues too.

They are hardy fish when healthy/established.

Great, I work at where I bought him and he came in perfect condition, no fin tears, ich, bumps…

I think he’ll be very easy to keep :)

*She* will most likely start eating anything you throw in the tank. Have you tried TDO pellets? Mine loves them. All of them start out female and may transition to male. But for leopards, the females tend to look better!

What type of Wrasse is this?
That’s my Hologymnosus doliatus :)

I’ve also only just noticed the question on sexing wrasses, all of them are born female. Then as they become more dominant they will transition to male. Leopards aren’t too known for transitioning without others of the same species being present in the tank (especially the Blacks, Choati and Ornatus IME).

I didn’t know that! Honestly I’m super happy that she’s a she, I think the female look so much cuter than the males

I haven’t tried TDO, are they available in Canada?

Not sure. They are from Reef Nutrition. My blue star leopard regularly eats TDO Small pellets, but also gobbles up a medium pellet when I'm trying to feed the LPS...

I’ll try and look around, I fed some new life spectrum Thera+A an hour ago and she took a small pellet for the first time! Super happy that it’s going so well

Mine also eats Thera+A, no problem. Yours will become a pig soon enough.

All ly Leopards, especially Black Leopards go after everything. Flakes pellets and frozen food. The pellets I use is Otohime C1 and c2 pellets. Good food.
Thank you for the recommendations, I’ll try and find a supplier in CDN that may have that brand. Today was her best day in terms of feeding and swimming, she went to see everything I put in the tank and was active for a good 8 hours.

She’s my first wrasse ever so I’m really happy that she’s been great so far :)
