Little structural question about new 10g aqueon tank

So!I got a 10 with a stand at a yard sale for 20$, the guy said he put in water that same day, and it was fine
He re sealed it with silicone as I could see. All dry!
MY POINT: I went to go clean it on my driveway, picked it up by the top rim just to get a grasp on the bottom, and it was loose, so I took the whole rim off, tank the silicone off of the straight edges(not the corners)
Would my little tank be fine?

If the rim came off it's not a good idea to use it. You can resilicone it but will it be the same? I can't be certain. I think a 10 gallon tank isn't the most expensive. Probably can get it for a good price at a Petco when they have the gallon sales.

But what even is the thing there for? I keep reading everywhere that it barely does anything and a lot of people die-rim, I just came here cuz those threads r like 5-10 years old

It may seem like it doesn't do anything but it is in some shape or way, helping the tank keep its square. Without it, it could possibly go out of shape and the corner edge silicone could fail.

There is a lot of silicone along the seams tbh
Should I just re silicone it? What silicone do u recommend?

You could try to silicone the rim back on. Just make sure the old silicone is off and the edges and facing is clean before redoing it. You would need GE silicone 1 Window and Door. Or you can get aquarium silicone. Either one is fine.

Aquaclear hob? No filter and just power head?
Trying to make this as budget friendly as possible

For this tank, probably a hob. Not sure if the aquaclear one is ideal but there may be others that are designed for saltwater. Just not budget friendly.

I would just silicone the rim back on.

People used to remove the top rims on these and run them rimless. That is risky but I would consider it no risk to simply replace it back on yourself with silicone.

You can run just a powerhead if you want, I like tidal filters if you go that route.

A powerhead is quieter and less obtrusive if that is important but a HOB lets you run rox carbon and disposable floss but those are also re-occuring expenses.

Are you sure this is still safe to use? I used to use it frequently but a few years ago they added a mold statement to the tube. I’m not sure if anything actually changed with the silicon but I haven’t been willing to use it since the mold free statement was added.

Hm. I can't say for sure if there were changes to the formula. I used it in my old sump when I sprung a leak 3 years ago. I don't remember if that had the mold resistant statement.

Marine land has a good budget hob, you can find them on amazon for cheap.

Although i would recommend making your own filter cartridges, seeing as how the premade ones are quite expensive

The rim holds the sides in so water pressure doesn’t push them out. It also helps brace the top of the panes against bowing out, although this effect is much more significant on larger tanks with cross braces.

Tanks designed to be rimless use thicker glass and have stronger connections between the panes to resist the same forces.

People have de-rimmed these 10g tanks, but to do so they’re eating into the safety factors applied for tank design. I also suspect a few folks who have done this have ended up with 8 gallons or so of water over their living room floor that they’ve not been keen to post updates on.

UPDATE!!!! I am gonna be swapping the stand and tank(+10$) for the 20 and stand he is selling
