Really, the math is not hard. Just plug the number of drops into this equation and out comes dKH:

Imagine contaminating a water sample and thinking that your alk is 4.5 DKH
Calcium 59.94 ppm on a digital read out test

I don't have time this morning. Can one of you just make a nice table, please? Excel, whatever, and screen shot and past her a graphic that she can reference.

Drops - DKH for both 5 ml and 10 ml with a column for readings direct and overdose
Does the first drop that I put in, count as one of the drops towards the result or is it just the starting drop

Every drop counts, including the first one.
Your question is reasonable, the instructions actually do not make that overly clear.

Do you understand the "end" color vs the "overdose" color and how that works?

Actually the more I read those instructions, they are terribly written... but the drop count ambiguity is glaring.

The good part is that it really does matter either way, as long as you always do it the same way. The actual alkalinity value in your tank is very forgiving.

Okay so my next question. Using the same red sea kit. Nitrate test came back between 10 and 20 on the color scale? Im reading different things... is this to high? Or acceptable? Color in vial is only viable for 2 minutes, it's been past 2 minutes. Just giving the color it represented with

Okay, i thought so. I was doing it that way anyways. I just sometimes over read stuff and think about it way to much. But yes. It turned yellow instantly after adding the 9th drop. It turned green the first time I did it

I've tried those test kits. I have some still. It just confusion for me
DHK for salifert is easy.

advised amount of water in the vile using the provided syringe
drops of reagent 1
fill small syring with reagent two
drip reagent 2 into the vile until color changes, swirling slightly between drops.

stop when color changes and read syringe level to chat. chat has results.

This test takes maybe a minute to complete and is the easiest ive had. I have hannas and prefer this to be honest, i find the hannas creep on readings depending how fast or slow you work, and they auto turn off which i hate.

So i need assistance. I tested my KH on February 1st. It took 19 drops to turn to the end color.

Today, feburary 5th, I'm testing my KH again and it took 9 drops this time and it was the overdose color.

The instructions say some math/ number stuff. And it's completely gibberish to me. Can someone help me understand by explaining what it's saying

I’m not familiar with this test but I recommend you get a Hanna Checker that will give you a number that you don’t need to calculate anything else.
I am not paid for this post.

I have that test kit.
It sits on a shelf along with every other RS kit and the API.

Simply the worst test kits I’ve owned. Complicated and inaccurate.

They are going to cause you much grief and money.

Salifert, Aquaforest, and Hanna lead the pack IMM.

Ugh yeah I know. I just don't have the 300 bucks just for the "starter kit"

They are nice to have... but you don't need that stuff yet unless KrisReef wants to gift them. He makes millions... they actually pay him not to post :p

It really doesn't matter for Alk - most are the same test and are accurate enough for her purposes.

Many API test kits are fine, and get a bad rap and the RS phosphate Pro is decent.

One can complain about various test kits from any of the vendors, each has pros and cons and not one vendor makes the "best" test kit across the board. It would be nice if that were actually the case though.

So here's the thing, I was using API test kits before this. Someone else on here recommened the red sea testing kits, so i though I'd give it a chance. I need numbers. Colors are not accurate enough for me. I can't just guess at which number it would be if the color was between two other colors. (Ex: below) when I did this test earlier, I had a pink color between the 10 and 20. What should I assume the accurate number is?
