What is this?
Grew in about a week in my sump. I say about because I've been kinda busy lately with other things going on. A week is probably the last time I was in my sump.

The sump has a frag rack so a light does come on every night.
This was found at/near the surface of the water.

It's hollow, that is strange to me. It's also paper thin,i can't believe it grew this large in a week or possibly me not noticing it last week. This stuck out like a soar thumb yesterday. It also came off the Rubbermaid tub easily.

Stuff like this is always intriguing to me. Since it’s new and never been seen before, where did it come from? Coulda been introduced on a frag I guess, but would think would have seen even a small remnant of it. And if nothing new introduced, why now did it decide to grow to such a large piece?

Very good questions.

My last frags came from Groton Marine Science high school. That was December.

It was a scary and intriguing moment.

You’ve found a type of marine sponge or macroalgae. Both can grow quickly in nutrient-rich, lit environments like your sump. The hollow, paper-thin structure and rapid growth are typical of these organisms. Since it came off the Rubbermaid tub easily, it’s likely a harmless growth, but if unwanted, you can remove it.
