Hey guys my neighborhood is experiencing a power outage with an estimated time of 3 hours before it’s fixed. I’ve put up 3 blankets to slow the escape of heat. Is my aquarium in danger? If it’s just 3 hours? I have coral and fish. Ps I’m still pretty new at this and haven’t experienced this before

Sorry to hear - I think the most important thing is oxygenation so hope you have a battery backup wavemaker/bubbler for circulation? Yes, next is heat - things don't do well <60F so try to close the aquarium top and try retain heat. You can try to boil water in a bag (assume natural gas is still available?) and try to submerge to keep warm.

How big is your tank and what is your livestock count?

I don’t have anything battery powered for circulation. Also I only have an electric stove

For 3hrs heat wouldn’t be my main worry. Oxygen is. You can try agitating the surface or grabbing a pitcher and scooping up water and dumping, keep repeating. For the future, pickup a battery backup like an EcoFlow to be able to run your return pump for future power outages

I think that it's manageable. I've used Styrofoam around the tank and covered the top to conserve heat. If things get colder, heat water in a bottle.

Circulation: before my automated UPS, I've used a battery-operated bubblers before.

Thankfully it came back earlier than expected. Power was out for a little over 2 hours. Everything is alive and swimming

Glad to hear. Just remember, this time was only two hours. Next time could be longer. Better to have a backup plan than to not be prepared and lose all your live stock. Lookup the EcoFlow batteries on eBay. You can get them refurbished with warranty this for cheap

Yeah will do. I never thought I’d get into a situation like this so now I’ll definitely prepare for it

3 hours is fine but just move the water for a bit too keep oxygen levels up because I had a power outage for 2 hours and the fish survived miraculously
