I had my 90 gallon running for maybe three months?

and a few days ago a raccoon entered through our cat door, went DOWN into the basement, and destroyed my tank.

Got into the sub tank like it was taking a little bath, snacked on clams- hermit crabs, sponges, and anything exciting. Knocked my fuge light into the water which electrified the water and destroyed the light- and proceeded to urinate into the water. Probably got a jolt and peed, but anyway.

Miraculously so many things survived. Makes me nervous what the ammonia levels were previously.

Had a family come down and pick up all the livestock and decided it was a sign from God to tear down that tank.

I am in the process of losing the Yasha goby though. Continuous prolapsed since the event. Very sad.

I took the opportunity to tear my nano down too, I’ll look to upgrade that to a larger nano….

In 2022 I had Hurricane Ian, it almost annihilated my reef tank, only thing left was 5 out of 22 fish and only some of the Zoa's survived. Yes I feel your pain.

Hi! Thanks for your concern but it is illegal in my state to own wildlife like raccoons. This is not a pet. This animal has been eating the cat food in our garage and came into our house through the cat door.

I sat with it for a number of hours because we didn’t want it to escape out of the trap until my dad finally decided to get out of bed to help relocate it.

The animal wasn’t scared of me, but she was terrified of my dad and mom, and of our cats.

I worked with wildlife rehab, I know how to behave around wild animals, this is not a pet. I cried two days after this event watching my tank go to hell.

I find it a little offensive people would think this was done on purpose. :grimacing-face:
Totally understand your pain and sorry for it. Being originally from southern Illinois, also had 3 baby coons once break into the house after the cat food, that was a lot of work getting them out. Raccoons can be very destructive to property

@chickpeas what is the status please? How are you doing? Are the cats okay? Did you take it all down? I read through the thread and your comments on how racoons can carry dangerous diseases and that, which I really did not think of when you initially posted. Truly a nightmare this whole thing you went through...

Nope, the raccoon was released about 30 miles from here!

Keeping a raccoon as a pet, or any wild animal, should be done by No one. I don’t care how cute they are.

Two, the diseases raccoons carry are so dangerous the local rehabilitation center will not take them.

And three- it’s illegal. I’ll hope she maybe lives in the woods happily but I’d rather just not think about it.

Yeah. This was not fun :loudly-crying-face:
Just need to step in and say almost everyone of us on this forum keeps wild animals in our aquariums as pets. Just saying!
