Yeah it will out grow that area within a year for sure. But for now it’s fine.
The colrs mostly only show under the ball blue lighting. In natural light it’s just hot pink/ red color.

Hey @*GAREEF*

Thanks for your service, and your tank looks awesome.

I’m considering getting an XXL of my own. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions since you’ve had yours for a while now?

Are you satisfied with the Red Sea protein skimmer? I’ve heard mixed things about them. I can’t tell based on online stuff- is it possible (without modifying them) to hook up the air intake for a CO2 scrubber?

Also, my previous tank was a 20G lidded AIO, similar to a biocube. I wound up encountering quite a few issues that frustrated me. I never had enough par for hard corals, there wasn’t any good way to incorporate a refugium, I had to cut a hole in the lid to pass my protein skimmer cup through… the whole thing was a PITA. Getting a new tank, my gut is telling me to go with a sump system, but getting the max nano XXL instead would be a little bit cheaper and simpler, likely more feasible under my current circumstances. I’m just struggling to figure out which of my annoyances were specific to my prior AIO model and which are applicable to AIO’s in general, if that makes sense. Do you feel like you’re playing Tetris trying to incorporate filtration equipment just to keep up with a normal bioload? Have you found maintenance to be harder than a sump would be? Have you ever considered adding a HOB fuge or anything?

I’ve been out of the hobby for 8 years. I’ve been keeping reef tanks since 1996.
I started this tank in October 2024.
30 lbs or so dry rock and about 5 lbs of cultured rock. Substrate is crushed coral labout 3/4 inch deep.
I used Dr. Tim’s and ammonia to start cycling along with a few other bottled bacteria.
I added two Kessil tuna blues, that I’ve had since my last tank 8 years ago.
Everything else is stock that came with the system.
I had a two week period of Ostreopsis, that I think was caused by a combination of adding aminos and letting phosphate bottom out to zero.
I added about 1000 copepods and 200 amphipods, 4 turbo grazers,10 astrea snails and about 20 small blue leg hermits and 4 red leg hermits.
Had a month long ugly stage.
I use Tropic Marin pro reef salt and B-ionic two part.
Every ten days or so I perform a 25% water change.
I feed Nori and Prime reef flakes 3-4 times daily.
Salinity 35
PH 8 - 8.45
Temp 78
Dkh 8 - 8.5
Calcium 420-450
Phosphate 0.10 -0.15
Nitrate 10-20
I don’t check magnesium except for icp ms.

My Kessil light schedule starts at 0700 peaks at 0730 and the peak lasts from 0730 to 1500 and ends at 1900. 100% intensity 60 color red 25 and green 5
My Red Sea led 50s Run same schedule but color is 100% blue, 60 white and 100 UV.

Thank you for your support it means more than people realize to me and all Veterans.
I love the Red Sea so far and I do currently have a C02 scrubber linked into skimmer and thank you for reminding me, I forgot to add that into my equipment list for this build.
I will take a picture tomorrow to show you how I have it hooked up.
Super easy maintenance and I always run low nutrient systems but this thing is a little ridiculous I was adding nitrates and phosphate for months but now I’m just adding phosphate every other day or so depending on the reading and or if I’ve fed reef roids.
I considered a fuge but I like the KISS method and so far the ph fluctuations aren’t that bad between night and day and I just hooked up my Hydros launch controller and in the next few days the dosers that go with it.
I will dose B-ionic 2 part and kalk at night to help combat the small ph fluctuations.
Thanks again for reminding me about the scrubber.

Again, I have a hard time figuring out where the problems from my old tank were because of the tank itself and where they were attributable to it being an AIO. Granted it may have been an issue with my sand having been reused after a die off, but despite using GFO I was still seeing VERY high phosphate levels. It sounds like you have a mid-high fish bioload, yes? Good to know that in spite of that you’re dealing with low nutrients as opposed to high nutrients.

Where is your full filtration equipment list? Have you needed to run anything beyond the Red Sea intended media bags, filter sock/nanomat, skimmer? Nothing beyond that?

By the way, what is that insane looking yellow and green acro in the thumbnail of your video titled “sublime”? it’s absolutely gorgeous! It looks like it might be JF homewrecker but figured I’d ask.

I only use the skimmer and filter sock that came with the tank and nothing else.
The coral you are referring to is a coral I got from my new friend I made and he brought it to my house for me. It’s a piece of his massive basketball sized JF Hateraid. Kinda weird name not sure how it got it or what it means? Hateraid? What does that mean?….lol but it is beautiful non the less and I have two of them currently.
Thank you for your compliments .
