I always knew I’d need a lid for my Mariner 100 tank. It’s rimless, and like many I love the look of an open top, but the idea of fish jumping bothers me, and besides, there’s Fluffy to contend with… I need a beefy lid that will deter a 14 pound killer.

I’m intrigued by the various mesh/plastic covers, which I must admit look nice. But I also want to decrease evaporation, so I’d need to buy the optional evaporation covers. I didn’t check all the brands, but I looked at Kraken Lids and Top Lids, and for my 48” tank it would be over $500! That’s just absurd. My wife is already ready to kill me, and that might push her over the edge.

Based on some recommendations here on R2R, I decided to try Walter Lids. They’re custom made of polycarbonate, and they are their own evaporation covers. The quote for mine was $190 delivered. I gave it a shot.

Communication was good. I asked for a cutout for an Avast Plank feeder, two AI Hydra mounts, room for cords in the two back corners, and a hinged feeding door on the front. About a month later I received the lid. It’s made in two pieces, which fit well on the rim of the tank:

There are multiple air holes as you can see— they’ll make as many as you like. This design significantly decreases the number of times I need to refill the ATO canister (I use a 10g RedSea Reef Can). There are no clips holding the cover in place; it’s thinner at the edges, so it sort of sits down into the tank. As you can see, it’s almost invisible when viewed from the edge. Of course the water condensing onto the lid doesn’t make for a crystal clear look, but I imagine any lid with evap covers looks similar. That’s the point of the evap covers; it’s a choice you make.

I’m happy, particularly for saving more than 60% off popular alternatives. YMMV.

My Walter Lids. Pretty sure it's polycarbonate, but I've been wrong before. Mine is 48"x20". Two pieces. Each piece has a feeding/maintenance door. Also cutout for Plank. Also little flaps in the corners for opening and closing for cords (currently no cords going into the tank but might have a Printed Reef Mandarin Feeder.

I sure hope that’s not acrylic. If it is it will warp in 3-6 months. It will look like a potato chip. It would be irresponsible to sell something made of acrylic for a lid.

But it looks nice right now.

Thanks for the correction re polycarbonate— post edited. I don’t know why I thought otherwise, but now I’m even happier!

It’s not acrylic. I know the brand and materials. It’s polycarbonate

My 75g had them installed early July 2024, no bowing, cracks, fading or discoloration, still perfect. Just little dirty. I added a plank after I got them so I needed one panel remade with a cutout. He only charged me 45$ for a new panel

Every customization was exactly where I asked

My newest lid posted in post 3 is for a Waterbox 15 peninsula. Even covers filtration area. Again, every customization was perfect. $72

honestly after seeing this i might have to order one, my current tank and only tank after moving now is my IM nuvo drop off 20g
when i bought it (used) it came with a custom acrylic lid which i mean does the job keeping my gobies in but there’s the problem, it’s acrylic, thick acrylic too and it’s warped over the past few months, plus it has the mesh center so lots and lots of evap especially now living in a more dry/hot area. for the price/ size and quality of what you got for only 190 i’m almost scared to ask about for my little 20g tank lol
might wait on one though
i have plans to drill it to take out the AIO part and add a sump, small frag tank to increase water volume and how many funny critters i can have

a Waterbox 15 lid is $70 and a Waterbox 20 lid is $80. I would expect the nuvo 20 lid to be in this ballpark

for what it will be, that’s not bad at all
i know some people will still say that’s too much but after having rimless tanks, tanks with poorly made lids, tanks with glass lids that have fallen in at one point and broke in the tank
getting an actual quality lid for that price is a steal, only thing holding me back is that the tank will eventually be drilled and what’s holding me back from that? it took me almost a year to find this one locally (the glass one in good shape) and i have never drilled a tank

Why does potentially drilling the tank hold you back from a lid?

I am very satisfied with my Walter Lid so far. Walter/Logan (still don't know which is his first and last name) was responsive (4.5/5 stars), price was very fair in my opinion (5/5 stars), quality of the lid was high (4.5/5 stars), docking half a star because I wasn't a big fan of the hinge connections, which uses this very clear command strip, which would come off or sag. I ended up taking off the command strips and gluing the hinges to the lid with a strong bonding plastic glue. Works like a charm and wasn't a difficult modification. Cutouts were perfect. Size was right on. Customization was great (I wanted extra holes for ventilation). I've used Kraken Lids, IM lids, IM DIY lids, and DIY screen door lids. I recommend the Walter Lid.

Why does potentially drilling the tank hold you back from a lid?
currently the AIO chamber is on the back wall but i want to drill it to end up being a peninsula tank so if i had a lid made now id have to get one remade as with seeing how flush these sit
it wouldn’t work with the back chamber and because i dont know what my equipment placement / list will be yet (all of the livestock i have will be moved to a temp tank when i do this) but yeah i just wanna do it all right

My feeding cup was supposed to be green but I was sent brown by mistake. I let Walter lids know, they apologized and are sending out the correct color feed cup at no charge and told me I can keep this one. Great customer service

I was just going to make a feedback post on my new lid. You saved me the trouble and I just piggybacked on your thread!

The lids are good quality, the people that make them are knowledgeable and friendly, and the price is best in the industry. No charge for cut outs or customizations. Can’t go wrong
