The exact same thoughts here and same reason for following this thread. Was considering just trying to make my own fleece roller with 3D printed parts, and some homemade electronics in a waterproof container.

I have a Klir setup in my rsf sump now. I have been unable to get it to fill up and trip sensor on its own (I think because water level is too low). But I do have it advance every 4 hours automatically. I am currently piloting this to see how it works

Following up on this, I spoke poorly on the Klir in the RFS sumos before. I had a little more patience over the last week and it works perfectly with no cutting and a few changes.

1) you do need the Klir caps for the other sock holes.

2) I had to increase the water level in my sump significantly. I ended up adding about 10g to sump which raised water level 2+ inches. On my RSF 39 sump, this brought it up to the 10.5 line. This also meant tweaking the flow on the pump and opening drain a bit.

3) because I raised the WL in the sump, I did need a stand for my skimmer

Theses were some basic things. For a simple drop in, I love it

Yeah I wasn’t sure about the conflicting comments. Good to hear it worked out as this seemed like the most attractive option. Do you think you still have enough water level in the sump in case of a power outage/siphon?

Also how did you determine the GPH of the drain pipe to know it would work for a given fleece roller?

Appreciate any insight as I’m looking to do this soon.

Midway through page 4 of my build thread I talked about how I calculate head height and flow.

The post is outdated a bit, because after these tweaks I had to increase flow to 60% on the MightyJet which equates to 720 GPH (assuming no buildup, etc within the pipes or pump). 100% works out to 1200 or so GPH at 8.6 Head height. 720 is just under the Klir 4 max of 750-ish (I’ve seen it advertised at 750, 790 and 800).

Couple other notes:

1) I have 3 slots for socks in RSF 39 and selected the middle one. CoralVue recommends this if possible. The first one may end up trigger sensor too much and create too much flow.

2) at 10 height in sump I can kill all the power for 15 minutes and the water level doesn’t go above the 11 inch mark. I which still provides a decent amount (6”) of contingency.

So I have the same aquarium and sump. I’m guessing 86 gallons for the amount to turnover was calculated based on rock and sand displacement?

Not the easiest fleece roller to find in stock either. I’ve seen mention of using the Fijicube AFR-20 but that requires modification. I’m half tempted to automate IMs Nuvo manual fleece roller with a sensor, stepper motor and waterproof housing. That would be a task and a half though.

Also I just found this and believe that it MAY fit, a tight fit though, with some slight modification.

The RFS39 sump is about 18.3” in height and the first chamber is about 4.3” in width.

So the automated filter roller is 17.65” tall with 5” of that length being what looks like where the fleece and electrical components are. The very bottom width is 2.36”x3.3” and goes to the top with a width of 4.75” (to include the motor?). Without the potential motor width by assuming this is placed at a level above the sump, it is 3.65” in width max. To achieve that height you would need to place the roller about 5.65” off the floor of the sump to have it the fleece and mechanicals sit above the top of the sump.

The intake for the water on the roller seems to be about halfway up the portion of the fleece roller below the mechanical housing. That section would be the length of the roller minus the length of the housing which is 17.63 - 5 so 12.63.

Half that to make it about 6.315”. Is the minimum water level for this to work? Or would you just funnel it in?

Anyone have thoughts or holes to poke in this?

I emailed IM specifically about the product above and they said it isn’t compatible. I am sure they really meant it doesn’t work without mods :)

Anyway, a week or so in, I am really happy with the Klir.

That is correct. There is a lot of wasted space with the back panel of the INT compared to EXT. in addition, I just have a lot of rock and sand.

After increasing the water level in the sump, I have about 98-100 gallons total
