Hi, I recently had some problems with these lights and was wondering if anyone else has had any of the same.

Had a 32" Basic sent to me. First day I noticed the light was changing colors off and on slightly. Called and they said to figure out which channel(blue or white) was bad and they could send me out a new driver to install myself or have a new one sent. Few days later the white would not go up more than about 24%. Called and was then told that I could have the driver sent out or I could send my light back and wait for a new one to arrive "if I could go without the light." Then I was told that too many people did not return lights when they had a replacement sent out first and that I could just purchase a second light and they would email(was forgotten) me a return label for the first one. Once I shipped it back they would start the refund for the bad light. I have corals and cannot go without the light so I decided to purchase a new one. Went with the better timer version since I was having a new one sent anyways and it has only one cord instead of three which was great.

The new light arrived yesterday with the display/screen damaged. Called today and decided to have a new timer/display sent out and I would make the repair myself, trying to avoid more hassle and money. I'm in almost 600 for both lights at the moment.. Went into the reef room and then really started looking at the replacement light I was sent. Noticed some of the lenses are foggy looking(could be normal). The moon lights are all those type of foggy lenses and a handful of other blues are also. The problem I see is why are there 3+ LEDs that are dimmer than the moon lights?? 100% Visible on video also. On top of it all since I'm already typing, the light has gaps visible from the top view because the metal is not shaped/fitting correctly, also one of the grooves/slots the legs slide into the light is tacked/welded a hair off and not lining up making putting it on a hassle. Has a QC sticker on the light. Not sure why.

I'm now really starting to question my purchase. My tank is the Nuvo SR-60 and it's 36" long and I need to start looking for another option. Any lighting recommendations under $400 that will do SPS and not leave shaded areas in a 36" reef? I went with SB reef lights because I thought they were better than similar lights so I think the large box style is probably out of the question. Would really like to use SB Lights but I'm honestly not looking forward to a third light with problems right out of the box.

Called back a few times with no answer, then a young lady answered me and said to hold, Mike was busy with another customer. I just gave my contact info and said for him to call me at his convenience. Tried calling back after with no answer since I'm now unhappy. Feel like asking for a full refund UNLESS SB Reef Lights makes it right for me. Went out of my way more than I would have liked to for a new item and if asked, I would like a brand new WiFi version send to me as the replacement at no additional charge/cost to me. Other than that option, the possibility of having more problems with the second replacement isn't worth my time and effort anymore IMHO.

Blues turned up 100% and moon lights on. The ones that look like they have a reflection/hardly visible are the LEDs in question.

I can answer a few of the less important parts of this post as I have used the lights for a couple of years now.

The dim diodes are the diodes advertised as true UV. Supposedly our eyes cannot see the wavelength well and that’s why they appear dim. I don’t know the validity of that but I can assure you it is like that on all of them. I have 3 and I go to his store a lot and see the lights over his systems.

I have 3 of the 16” over my 100g and had 2 of them end to end over my 36” 65 gallon. I personally just use the basic units because I wanted to eliminate parts that could fail since it’s ultimately still a cheap Chinese light. I have not had any issues with any of the lights I have so far.

Spectrum wise, these lights are great and they grow and color sps very well. Customer service wise, me personally it’s been great but I am local and can go talk to someone. I have noticed an increase in complaints but don’t know if that increase comes with volume sold or decrease in quality or service.

I have to admit....You are probably right, I just fired up the first light I got and after a quick blinding I saw they are dimmed also. THAT MAKES ME FEEL A LOT BETTER but I'm still having to make a repair to a brand new light. The first light's metal looks like it was fit together nicely but some of the treads were a hair off like the two large tension bolts on each side would not thread in. I wasn't planning on using them anyways so I didn't attempt to force them in, says a lot about their quality control though.

Yeah man that sucks to get a new light with damage for sure. I hope they make it right by you because I have really gotten some good use out of mine. There is enough to worry about in this hobby without having to fret over equipment.

I'm sure that Mike will make it right for you. Fingers crossed. I second the dim lights are same as mine... if what I'm looking at is what you are referring to. I don't know about the cloudy lenses though. Send a shot of the questionable lenses without the lights on. None of mine were cloudy. It is possible you got a returned light sent to you by accident. I can understand your frustration and feel your pain but, be thankful this didn't occur with an $800+ Kessil. It happens to all the big manufacturers/distributors, you just happen to be the unlucky one. I, as well, just went with the basic and hacked them to be run on the Apex. It is simple and works, so far...

Yeah I checked the first light. It has the lights dimmed also. Some of the lenses/reflectors are different and not clear like the other ones which I'm thinking is by design. Going to post a picture from my phone in a minute.

Honestly want to use SB lights and the fit is perfect for my 36" reef. Frustrated because I don't feel I should have to replace parts myself(could possibly legally void warranty if I did) or should have had to pay upfront for a replacement to a damaged product with another damaged product. Hope he makes it right, would have been nice if I got a call back already and I could have asked more questions over the phone.

If you look at the moon lights they are all foggy looking instead of crystal clear. Looks like there's a few from each color like that.

I way happier the LEDs are fine. Here's the basic in the box with the bad driver I'm returning for aure. Look at the trim/metal, it looks nice. Then there's my better timer version on my tank now and just look. All four sides are bowed out. I was worried about dropping a screw in there.

I run a 32 Extreme wi-fi and it has been a good light so far other than a resistor that burnt out. I live local and Mike fixed it that day. Your lenses are just like mine. I keep a cheap set of Black box lights put up in case something happens to the light. Hope you get it worked out.

I'm beginning to believe the lights are built using some old parts... If even a single old/used part is used wouldn't the light be considered refurbished?

The back of the new light has a screw missing that I did NOT notice at first. I checked the box thinking it could have rattled loose(doubted) while shipping, there was no screw. Looking at the light, there's marks where a screw had been at one time. I'm thinking either the light has a used part/s or for some reason my light was opened up during shipping by persons for whatever reason and then they forgot to put the screw back in.

Either way it's unexceptable. I know I went the cheaper route but come on, really, what's next. Dude still hasn't called back either. One would think after a second screwed up order and paying twice I would be higher on the priority list but guess not...

There's absolutely no way the screw fell out while in my possession. Really wish their company would import the lights and do a visual inspection at least before sending it out to the customer.

Yup, definitely should be a screw up there... oh, wait, that IS a screwup!;) Just trying to bring some brevity to the situation. Call Mike again. Calmly explain the situation and see what can be done to make YOU happy.

Also, post up on the FaceBook page. I have never seen those types of posts go up answered by someone at SB...

I have these with Zero issues. Will say their customer support is difficult to reach and with response delays. otherwise superb lights. I also on a different tank have the 16" wifi extremes which are better yet

I'm as calm as possible..... for the current situation, believe me.

Had to wait for the new display to arrive and asked Mike to mail me the return label for the first damaged light in the box also.

EXACTLY LIKE AN "IDIOT," I did not look at the addresses on the lable. Mailed the light out yesterday with the lable he printed for me and GUESS WHAT?? It arrived on my doorstep little bit ago.....

What the frick?? Horrible customer service they have provided me with. I'll never forget it.

Oh...AND HE HAS NOT CALLED BACK YET EITHER SINCE LEAVING MESSAGE WITH THE LADY. Called again a few minutes before this post and lady said he'd call me back again. Yeah, sure.

His lights have a great impression and coral growth amongst reef aquarists and he best step up as this will hurt hisreputation and sales and eventually destroy his entity (as a former pet store owner, I've seen this happen first hand- Odell aquariums, as an example)

I have to admit, with the timers set to turn light on and off one at a time with delay has my corals happy. Only my Acans are a little smaller/unhappy and one chalice, probably because I have the lights a little too high too fast.

Not sure how much worse this single(wait double since I have gotten a refund yet) transaction can get for me. Now my wife is pi$$ed, that means we now have a problem.
