A rational bidding strategy is to put in the highest you're willing to do into proxy and walking away. When you do it isn't as important, especially if you have life schedule conflicts with the end of the auction. Might also scare people away from those pieces thinking someone just really want it to bid like this early on. Finally, most people don't have the time, energy, or memory to know what SBB pieces go for "normally."
