Substrate (or lack thereof) is one of reefers' first decisions when setting up their reef. What we land on depends on what your reef's needs will be, as well as the aesthetic you are going for. One of the more popular choices for sublate is none at all: Bare-bottomed tanks. What do you think?

i like bare bottom tanks, but prefer the diversity from having sand. allows for more fish/invert options.

Other. I pulled my sand bed after failing to be able to get rid of prorocentrum dinos. I really like the look of sand, but I do admit that vacuuming my tank is way easier now. It's a toss up. Right now, bare bottom seems to be easier, but I do dream of sand.

I like wrasses - specifically sand sleeping wrasses and I don't want a bowl of sand in the tank so I'll stick with a sand bed.

Bare bottom all the way! I have a sheet of beige acrylic as my bottom for better aesthetics. Easy to siphon detritus, and can handle increased flow down low. I have Ricordea growing on mine. I have sand in my classroom reef at school, (not my decision at the time of setup), and have been fighting dinos off and on for a year.

Looks great. Might have to steal this idea if I ever tear down and redo my reef.

I like everything about no sand better once its mature except the looks. Hence...i gotta deal with the negative parts for the aesthetical pleasure in thr display. Anything but a display is fine no sand for me.
