Looking to build single light mount with T-slot, The light weighs about 8 lbs. Was planning on using 30 mm to make the arm. Since I was going to attach to the stand, was going to use a double width piece attached to the stand to give 2 attaching points for the mount arm to stop any wobble or shaking. My question is would 20 mm be good or should I stick with the 30 mm

Too bad @Reefer Reboot isn't around any longer. He is a wiz at designing t slot stuff. He designed my hinged light mount and gave me an list of what was needed so all I had to do was order items and assemble.

I went with 30mm from Zyltech for mine because it isn't that much more than 2020. Your tank is rimmed, right? I decided to put my T slots directly on the stand instead of using some T slots as a "stand-off", and I bought some thin felt padding to go between the T slots and tank/stand for scratch protection (back of tank is blacked out):
