So in the US it's Thanksgiving this Thursday. What are you planning for dinner?. Our house hold has not served a traditional T Day dinner for a few years now as we all agree that turkey was no one's favorite. This year we plan a seafood buffet Cajun style. Just curious if others have made the same changes. There will be 11 people at our table all excited about dinner.

Headed to my father-in-law's for the traditional dry bird, under seasoned mashed potatoes, and Stove Top stuffing from a box. I may get to make the mashed potatoes this year, so they may be seasoned a little better. And I've been asked to make desserts, I'm thinking a pumpkin cheesecake, salted caramel turtle cheese cake, and a good 'ole apple pie.

My wife and I do our own little Thanksgiving at home, probably the following weekend. We both like the turkey breast, and I've been doing it a lot lately with a Sous Vide immersion cooker in a 'Porchetta style" a la J. Kenji Lopez-Alt from Serious Eats. Not the only way, but a very good option:

Or, I've done this one a lot too, take a look at how he roasts the turkey skin entirely on it's own and it becomes like cracker crispy, just awesome lol:

I do the old fashion deep fried turkey every year. Emeril's Cajun recipe is the base ;)

As puerto rican we make turkey stuffing with plantain, making it into “mofongo”

Other items include:
Pork belly or pineapple ham
Traditional rice with peas “arroz con gandules” and “Pasteles”
Potato salad and sweet potato
Coquito and piña colada

Going later to get ingredients, exiting

We will usually do mostly traditional, although we talked about doing something along the lines of your family also because turkey isn't really any of our favorites either.

Typically we'll visit my parents later in the day and they usually do a polish food themed thanksgiving. Kielbasa, potato kielbasa, homemade meatballs, halushki, pigeons(cabbage with beef and rice inside with sauce) and some other things.

I get in trouble if I serve fish...I made oyster stuffing one year and only one year.

I've been hosting for several years now. We only cook the turkey, stuffing and gravy. Every one else brings stuff, my mom is the creative cook so interesting squash dish, orange cranberry sauce, salad, maybe a traditional green bean casserole. My wife's family brings mashed potatoes, carrots, rolls and several desserts. All bring beverages of choice.

This will be the largest gathering so far, 10 adults and a newborn I've yet to meet. Folks will likely be eating on the couch this year...running out of tables.

Last year's table settings...my house was running on electric space heaters last year. My furnace crapped out exactly a year ago and didn't get a replacement until mid December. Something to be thankful for this year.

For the last 25 years, I've been the cook. Got it down to a science. This year is a repeat of last year where I get up at about 5AM, have coffee, watch a stupid program and then get to it. I do mashed potatos, Stuffing (I make my own chicken broth about a month before and Croutons that I season a few weeks before). I gotta try to find duck eggs for the recipe still. I make brown sugar Yams, store all of that in crock pots, then go to my Mother In Laws house to prep the Turkey around 9AM. After that's shoved in the oven, I go back home and do green bean salad and regular beans (bacon cooked the night before), The potatos are peeled and stored in water the night before. Cranberries prepped the night before. Then I mellow for a few hours, show up at about 1PM to Mom's House, get the turkey out and do the gravy.

My wife does pumpkins pies and Mom does cranberry salad, ham and apple pie. Wife also makes these KILLER rolls! Daughter makes a raspberry cheesecake.

It's a very cool coordinated effort that always runs over but that's cool. I absolutely love being around my in laws.

We may have 15 to 25 people depending on who shows up.

When me and my wife got together 20 YEARS ago she was use to doing all of the cooking for TDay. Our first Thanksgiving I did the turkey, yams potatoes she did the pie and salads and appetizers. She was so grateful. She said for the first time it wasn't a chore. Sounds like a great day planned for you

My wife will make a traditional turkey dinner. Homemade stuffing ( out of this world), mashed potatoes, my personal favorite, green bean casserole and usually pumpkin pie. Even better the next day she’ll make turkey croquettes, she grinds up the remaining turkey and stuffing and forms them into thick patties and then she breads them. Warm them in the oven and pour gravy over them.

Ok! Now I'm starting to think twice for next year! Everyone is making me hungry!

We are always some version of traditional, my dad is a foodie, so it is always amazing. Weve had turkey cooked just about every way imaginable, but i think all our favorite is brined, seasoned and smoked. My siblings and their significant others, me and my wife always bring sides. Those get interesting sometimes. My sister makes some candied carrots in butter that are amazing, weve done jalapeño poppers, green beans with bacon, cheesy artichoke hearts, and a few other casserole type dishes. And garlic mashed potatoes. And homemade rolls with freshly ground wheat... cant be beat!

You asked! I was so close to deep frying a turkey. I haven’t done one in a couple of decades. It seemed in the nineties you couldn’t go to a cookout with a deep fried turkey. One year we were going out to Connecticut to my dads for thanksgiving. I have 3 brothers out there and my sister and her husband and my other brother and wife were coming from California. I told my dad I was bringing a deep fryer to cook the turkey. They were appalled and had never heard of what the hillbillies from Ohio wanted to do. My stepmother bought 2 one for traditional and one for the nasty deep fried one. I showed my dad how to do it in the backyard. To make a long story longer there wasn’t a piece of deep fried turkey left after dinner but plenty of baked turkey for leftovers the next day.

Good Lord Brother! LOL, that's the worst week ever! But that's from a dude whose 60. When I was your age I would have LOVED it! We'd have TG at my Aunt's house and then I'd drive with my best friend to his Mom's house. She lived over the mountains so we'd either have to drive Snoqualmie Pass, then Bluet Pass or just hang on for dear life and go over Steven's pass. In a rear wheel drive 1975 Dodge Dart. NOT a good snow car! But we were cool with it cause we were indestructible 20 year olds! One of those trips we got to the top of Snoqualmie and my dash caught fire. Faulty wiring. We put it out but it had destroyed everything, speedometer and all. So we aired out the car got gas (cause I couldn't remember if we had enough and the gas Guage wasn't working) and headed to Bluet Pass. No issues. Thankfully!
