Assuming they are mertens, the reduced popularity is from size, color, or some drawback I’m missing?
Typically both size and color. Many that are stressed appear to have nice color that more pronouced, but once they settle in they often turn a drab brown color. They can also get over 24" across and tend to lie flat on the rock surface, so unlike gigs that typically have folds, they end up taking up a lot of real estate without much visual interest. I've seen a couple of nicely colored ones (a rust colored one as well as a green one) but nothing close to the colors we see in both gigantea and haddoni: blue, purple, bright green, and red (this color is extremely rare for gigantea).

Thanks very much! :)
