What is your experience with a new trochus snail? I introduced one last night. He has not moved, I floated him in a bag to adjust temperature for about 10 minutes and I set him on a rock of algae. He had retracted inside his shell, and even after about 2 hours he hadn’t come out. The rock I set him on was very high, so I thought maybe I should move him lower. I put him in the sand right next to algae covered glass. This morning, he was on his side (idk how long or what knocked him over, maybe the nassarius snail on accident). But this kinda worried me bcuz don’t they right themselves? I didn’t pay attention to see if his body was still retracted inside the shell, I just wanted to make him right side up.
My last snail died unexpectedly, but there is nothing wrong with my water. The other snail was an XL Mexican turbo who died after being upside down while I slept, most likely he was that way all night, 6-8 hours.
Maybe I’m over thinking this but I am very nervous about my trochus… any ideas? I’d rather not disturb him anymore, but right now I can’t tell if he’s inside his shell or not.

Should I keep him here? Or move him back to the algae rock (second pic)

I have a torches snail that will go to the back corner of my tank and look dead for what feels like days at a time. Then I’ll randomly see him out of his corner eating algae and back to the corner he goes. I wouldn’t worry too much about your snail

There could always be something wrong with your water parameters and there are many elements that can be and get into your water that standard test aren’t available for outside of a lab icp test.
Mexican turbos can and will right themselves up after being upside down.
Many snails are nocturnal during the day they won’t be moving much at all if any.
If a turbo grazer is upside down and doesn’t right himself up after the lights go out, there is more than likely something wrong with him or your water parameters.

I’m just anxious since the last one died I think. I won’t disturb him anymore but I think if after a 3-4 days he doesn’t move I might have to worry some

I don’t know how long he was upside down for, coulda been just minutes. I’ve always read XL Mexican turbos are not capable of righting themselves, which i experienced a few times with mine. Just the last time it happened he was upside down without me knowing for too long.

First, why was the turbo upside down so many times? That’s the question you should be asking yourself.

Dude I have no idea. Maybe he was clumsy lol. He was the biggest thing in my tank, nothing to pick on him. Unless watchman gobies have something against turbos. I don’t think 3 or so times is “so many times” either

I’ve been in this game since 1996 and have worked in the industry a good portion of that time.
Just trying to help you out with the knowledge I have. Take it or leave it but you asked so just trying to help you.
If the snail keeps falling over there is a reason why and usually it’s not a good reason.

From personal experience, when I toss trochus snails in my tanks. They usually move in 5 minutes. Mine do have periods of dormancy where they just stay in one location for hours on end.

Any snail that you find constantly flipped over can potentially be unhealthy. Some are legit clumsy though lol. Trochus should be self-righting themselves. So if you find its still flipped after a while. I would be worried.

But in the end. Every so often just give it the ole' sniff test.

Trochus are known to fall and not work themselves back in position, but assure you dont have low calcium, elevated phosphates and tankmates that are annoying them.

Idk if I trust the sniff test, my turbo didn’t smell and was absolutely 110% dead. And he was a big guy. Still, I’ll do it. It can’t hurt. Fingers crossed I wasn’t sold a dead or dying snail….

I’m thinking of buying a calcium test soon. I have no predatory or aggressive tank mates either

You can also take a water sample to an LFS that does calcium tests and have them check for you

My local doesn’t do calcium tests but they do sell them. I might check another store to see if they can do it for me before buying one myself.

Another thing, my nassarius snail is thriving. No issues whatsoever. So the trochus must just be shy and settling in. If it were calcium or phosphate that killed the turbo and is killing the trochus, the nassarius would be dead already bcuz I got him same day as the turbo.

Trochus and margarita snails require a GOOD acclimation - for me well over an hour. My trochus are over 3 years old
Phos and calcium wont kill them but if high, po4 - can weaken them and CA if low will not support their shell health/growth

Well my acclimation was not that long. I floated the bag in the tank to get him to the right temp for 10-15 minutes. Could this be the issue? I am thinking maybe my issue is high phosphate after looking up indications of that. Test recommendations?

Hanna or salifert tests are best
I float bag and then empty contents in a small/clean pail and add a pint of water every 10-15 minutes until salinity matches that of tank its going into. When I see snails start to move, I lower them into tank
Another thought,,,, if LFS pulled them off the glass rather than wiggle them loose, they will weaken the snails

Thank you for the recommendation and I will keep ur acclimation process in my notes for next time
