Viparspectra v165 on my 30 gal

Hey all, posted about this the other day but wanted to follow up. I’m hanging a Viparspectra v165 over my 30 gal. It’s currently sitting exact 12” above the tank. Wanted some input on the specific settings of the light—what % should be blue, white, and how long each should run for. I know it’s different for every tank and coral, but I wanted some starting points to see what I can adjust from. Let me know, thanks!

That light is super overpowered for the tank, its unlikely that someone will have a similar set up so you won't have the benefit of someone's experience.

I would suggest to rent a par meter from your fish store. The par meter will help you adjust the intensity so you don't cook your corals. I'm thinking down to 30%-40% intensity, but I'm just guessing.

Once you have the par setting that you like, then you can adjust the blue and white to your preference.

i would start with whites 10 to 15 blues 50 and see how it looks. I only run my whites for 5 hours blues on for 12, works well for me.

That must be why everyone always says they run at 1-5% on the whites?

I run mine at like 2-3% for a few hours and blues at 75% for the whole time 14 hrs

I have 2 165w on a 120g 2x2x4. You think 2% white 50% blue is a good starting point? I have 0 corals but plan on getting a few lps and maybe a birds nest. Or should I start at 30 and try to work up to 50%?

The 165s also are a little different than the 300s but not much. About 13" above water line will blend the light well. I have 4 300s over a 125 but I'm acro heavy. A par meter wouldn't hurt when setting them up but it should be plenty of light for what you need for sure.

I'm sure I'll upgrade eventually. I'm going to stick with mostly lps and get a few easier sps, but then once I'm comfortable with their care and maintaining the system, I'll need new/more lights cuz I love sticks

I run mine at 50% blue for 10 hours and 1% white for 7 hours.

Very strong light. Grows everything, sticks, clams.

Running 6+ years now.

Yea I'm pretty sure with that much going on, a molehill can become a mountain pretty fast. Or at least feel like it with all that one the line!

Lol..its usually fine. At this level it's kind of a part of the lifestyle so it's all good.

I have the same light on my QT tank about 13” off the water. Channel 1 at 80 and channel 2 at 10
I’m getting over 200 par about 5” up from sand and over 100 on sand
