I feel like most of us on here are trying to become more knowledgeable about the hobby and how we can improve our personal tanks. I am curious to know how exactly you are bettering your reefing knowledge. Are you asking questions whenever something comes up, reading up on the latest reefing trends, or learning from experiences, both good and bad? Let's see your steps to becoming more knowledgeable about reefing!

I try to rely primarily on only one method/source of reefing info, that way I'm not tangled in this mess of information given by dozens of reefers with their own opinions, right or wrong.

It's not a conscious effort for me. To partake in this dynamic and ever changing hobby I read A LOT about equipment and different marine life. The enjoyment I obtain from the hobby lends it's self to researching. Sources of information come from vendors sites, and other hobbyists commentary. At one point I had numerous books but unfortunately that's no more. In today's social media world fortunately you can hunt down just about everything.

Regardless whether fresh or salt, fish or inverts I've always been the type to set up some sort of test tank and have at it because knowledge read or heard can often be conflicting and too often parroted. Experience through failure turned success best I've found.

I come here and search threads. I like to see if I can get an answer before I post something. Sometimes, I'll go on youtube and watch reefing videos from BRS or other sources.

I read “Coral” and “Reef Hobbyist” magazines, and various reefing books. I also peruse yt videos, but with a grain of salt. I also read a lot of posts on here. The rest is personal experience. I know what works for my five tanks most of the time.

I like to read old fashioned books with pages that turn.

Much more recently started hanging out here on reef2reef and I've learned a lot. I've found out that most of what I used to know has been debunked and moved on :) I've been having some catching up to do.

I've read Paul B's book recently too. It was an interesting take, and certainly gave me a lot to think about. I'm inclined to agree with most of it... not to mention he has the results to back it up!

For us here its really an obsession, i immerse completely and harbour a learning environment. We listen to podcasts and speakers sometimes for 7-8 hours a day, along with lots and lots of books, old books and new books alike. learning the foundations and all of the progressive concepts and changes is what i really enjoy. Being able to take those understandings and apply them to our tanks is the best way for us to retain and visualize and sometimes we even have the opportunity to learn first hand alongside some of the legends in reefing that reside here in South Florida and the Florida Keys!!

Had that book. Now I prefer copies on Kindle :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

Reading the forums here or my local facebooks. And contributing. There is a lot of good stuff out there and a lot of misinformation.
